I was looking at this same rifle yesterday. How heavy is the trigger pull with the nonadjustable trigger? I'm not looking for a match rifle, just something to pick off squirrels with so at under $200 is it worth buying?
It felt around 4-5 lbs but after putting a spring from a clicker pen, it's around two .
Also, the trigger breaks cleanly with no creep or over travel. I definitely think its worth $200.

I guess I'm goin to Walmart after work! Woohoo my second Marlin!
I just bought one of these rifles the other day from wal-mart, took it apart and mine does have the adjustment bolt and locking nut. I would contact marlin and have them send you the parts needed.
Just bought the 917 VRX at Walmart on 8/12/2012 got it home and took it apart and the one I bought has the adjustable trigger (screw and lock nut are there). I called Marlin and they told me the only reason the X is on the model (VRX) is because Marlin no longer makes/distributes the 917 except to big box stores by special contract so the model number identifies the rifle as the ones manufactured after Marlin stop their production line for the 917. Marlin also told me they do not/did not change any thing between a VR and a VRX.
The Walmart vrx I have has the adjustable trigger.
I talked to a few other owners and theirs came with the adjustable trigger also
I have heard that Marlin took them out as a cost saving method for Walmart.
Well all I know is mine is set now lighter then out of the box.
Right now my favorite rifle.Hmmmmm?......
