I love this old rifle. It's an early-60s version (no serial numbers era) that has the stock with the squirrel embossings. It was given to me by my FIL; he'd found it in one of his rental units completely caked with rust.
After I had it in a shape to shoot SWMBP and I took it to the range. Shot fine after a few initial misfires, but does not feed reliably. We were actually feeding manually as each round after passing through the feed throat would not feed true.
I've worked and worked getting it restored and I'd like to know the forum's recommendations for action rebuild parts. Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

When I talked to the Marlin folks, they said the squirrel motif was only two years in the late 70s.

Could be. There sure seems to be a lot of folks claiming their 60 with squirrels dated from earlier than that, though. Heck, I like 'em no matter where they date from. My stock is birch, I think, but I'd like to see a walnut stock with those little tree-rats on it one day. They're a nice retro touch IMHO.Originally Posted by Pard

Heck, just for giggles, you ought to put that on Gunbroker as a "rare squirrel stocked model" and see what you can get.

Morekick, you sure got your hands full restoring that one. If your able to get thru the rust and misfiring issues, try refinishing that birch stock, sometimes there is some nice wood there. Good luck.

Yikes!!!! That looks like one of those rifles that have been laying in the bottom of the aligator hunter's boat! One thing for sure, you can only improve on this rifle. You couldn't make it any worse....

They musta been on something, there's TONS of Squirrel stocks out there...Originally Posted by Pard

A firearm should be a tool in the hands of a deadly weapon, not a deadly weapon in the hands of a tool.

I would just order a complete action set from Brownells. Runs around $40.
It's actuall called "Side Plate Assembly, Complete"
P/N 550-000-495AD
That would rule out anything in the action.
Change the recoil spring, make sure everything is clean, put it together and bang bang bang.
I would also make sure that the mag tube is clean and unblocked.
That thing looks scary now, but with a little bit of work and such, it could shine again.
