Well I was cleaning my just purchased 981T for the range tomorrow and noticed something odd. I took the bolt out to clean it and lube it up. When I put the bolt back in the gun, I noticed something odd. The sear fires when I close the bolt!! Everytime i cycle the action and turn the cocking handle, I hear a click and the the gun has fired!! Man AM i PO'D!!! I cant even call Marlin customer service till Monday. Does anyone have experience with this?? I would really appericiate some advice. I have never had a probelm like this before.
thanks

I examined the 981t further and it looks like there is a spring missing from the trigger group. I took apart my 917 and it has a spring that I can see, butr on the 981t there isn't a spring. I have read that some people replace the trigger spring does anyone have experience with this?? or am I way off??

you can verify parts by going to the marlin web site, click on 981t scroll down to owners manual and go to the parts schematic and part listings. You buy this new? If so should be in your owners manual, I like the web version because zooming in is possible, with the eyes getting worse with age, BIGGER is better! I did notice something there in diagram (H) but couldn't find any reference to it. Shows something on the left side with the bolt being pulled all the way back, possible indexing mark for re-installing the bolt?? Good luck. Mr fixit

Mr Fixit, thank you for the reply. I did look at the manual. I believe that the sear spring fell out/is missing. I didn't buy it new. I was looking for an inexpensive .22 for plinking. I am not sure how hard/expensive it is to replace the sear. I am hoping to avoid sending it off to the factory.

It is very easy to put that spring in. One screw holds the trigger group on and you just remove that screw. It all stays together. Put a lil dawb of grease on the end of that spring when you get a new one to keep it in the hole for re-assembly. Bummer you didn't have it.
Fellows is it the spring that is usually replaced w a spring from a ink pen to lighten the trigger pull?

You could try taking the Original Trigger Spring & placing it on the sear, then putting the clicky-pen spring on the trigger
Right this minute I can't remember correctly (sick as a dog), but I think the trigger spring is longer than the sear spring. But you can benefit from a stronger sear spring when you put a lighter trigger spring on.
Numrich seems to have it in stock, wow SOMETHING IS IN STOCK!! LOL Sorry, inside joke.

I took the rifle completely apart. The composite stock is slightly diffrent then the diagram in the manual. The sear spring was still there, it was just off a bit. I also noticed that the sear spring was very loose. I corrected the sear spring and tightened the screw. After putting the rifle back together, it functions corretly. I am goin g to take it to the range tommorow, to see if it will work. I am going to be careful with it, hopefully it will work.

I just got back from the range and the rifle worked great. It was pretty accurate out to 50 yards. I chalk up any errors with it to my lack of shooting skill and a stiff breeze. It was fun to shoot and the magazine holds 17 LR rounds. Seemed like I could shoot forever without having to reload. I am glad that I was able to get it working. I learned something new, about the rifle and that always puts me into a good mood!!

Glad to hear you got it going, congrats, knowledge is a great thing. Mr fixit
