The old reliable 30-06. Put food on the table, neutralize threats, ammo no problem.

I'm a 30/06 fan so that's the way I would go. The 308 will be close to a 30/06 but I just can't like them for some reason. I've owned a few but I've always came back to the 30/06.

Stuff it full of quality ammo and good bullets and honestly a whole bunch of stuff just works.

then of course there is me - has to be an instigator in every group - my one gun would be 30-30 Ackley - good to 200 yds or a bit more - if you need more range a bolt gun in 7x57 or 7mm08 will get er done....then - as everyone else has posted - 308 or '06 -

30-06 is a good squirrel rifle, shoot about a inch in front of their head on the limb they are on and if the splinters (bark) don't kill them you can catch them when the limb breaks. lol

30-06, due to available components, factory ammo, and a BIG variety of bullet weights and types.

The .308WCF 180grn, especially when loaded with superformance powders, matches 30-06 standard factory loadings. For all North American game out to 400 yards the 308 is tough to beat.
No offense to you but the 30.06 will do anything the .308 can and it will do it better.

Well, you all know me so I'm picking what I use and that is a 45/70. I can shoot 600 yards or 25 from squack to yak.

I have enough components to load for another lifetime so I'll take that cartridge with me anywhere & everywhere.

Exactly!!!! That's what we call "barking". The bullet doesn't whack him. Rather, it's the bark shards and sheer trauma. It works.
