    .308 for me. If its a bolt gun, shorter throw on the action, faster follow up shot. If its chambered for .308 you can always pickup some 7.62x51mm as well, a little more versatility in ammo availability (sources).

    Bolt rifle 22inch barrel 30-06 or 308 Win, or 270Win----all good calibers and always available. Backup big bore pistol 44mag, 475, or 500 cal. revolver. Pretty much covers it.
