    Light loads in 45-70

Was going to try some light loads in 45-70 with cast bullets to give the shoulder a break. I was thinking about using Unique or 2400. My question is: Is it necessary to use some kind of filler to take up the extra space in the case and hold the powder charge against the primer? I thought I read somewhere about using either Dacron material or oatmeal. If this is the case what proceedure do you use to do this?

Hey there MT -- I consider fillers unnecessary. Go here for light loads www.gmdr.com Click on the Oregon Trail loading data in the upper right of the home page. Best regards. Wind

For light loads it's really tough to beat Trail Boss. I've loaded it in .38 spcl, .45 Colt, .500 Wyoming, and .45-70 with very good results on all of them.

I load 14 gr of Unique in my 45-70 without filler. Unique is not position sensitive.

Try a 300 gn jacketed with 33 gns of Reloader 7 starting load and it's easy on the shoulder.

I'd vote Trail Boss and a 100% load density (full to the base of the bullet, but NOT compressed)

Try Lee's ruger old army mold it is 220 gr. double cavity plain base. It throws .456 to 458" boolits and with 10 gr. unique it gives clean cases. Any lower cases are dirty. Western Bullet Co. sells lyman's 457130 boolit a 140 gr. collar button. Lyman manuals give 5 gr. unique for 900 fps. Both easy on the shoulder. You did not spec. boolit weight. Hope this helps. Have fun and bangaway.
