Ok... what book do i need to buy that has hard-cast bullet reloading info for the 45-70 and Reloder 7? i am shooting 405 gr bullets, meister is the manufacturer, and have a quantity of alliant reloder 7 that i would like to load up... i've seen loads of up to 50 gr for jacketed ammo like the remington 405 SP, but nothing for cast ammo...
i have called meister and while they weren't willing to tell me anything over the phone, they were happy to sell me their reloading manual for $11... i agreed and the manual is on the way...
one if by 45-70, Two if by 444....
Check out the lynmans reloading book, number 47 or 48 Is there curent editon. I don't have it but browse through the one at the local gun store.
Also go to loadswap.com, enter it, agree with the terms policy, go to "view rifle loads" and on page 10 they have a surplus of 45/70 loads many of which are cast. Enjoy.
Speer's #13 manual has some cast bullet load data for the .45-70, but it's all pretty mild stuff in the "trapdoor" section.
The little RCBS Cast Bullet Manual has some good looking loads too. Up to 1700 fps with a cast 425 grain bullet in their Marlin section.
The same bullet is loaded up to 1928 fps in their Ruger Number One!
I use the LEE 405 gr hp, cast of straight wheel wts in my H&R Shikari. Reloader #7, 43 gr. Load was given to me by the old Hercules powder comany years ago. This has put a lot of venison on our table. POWDERMAN.
I use the same bullet and powder. I got my info from the Lyman book. I used the following out of my Guide Gun, 40gr RL 7, 405 meister, rem case, Fed primer. I got great groups and it averaged 1492 fps. I used this set up on a recent bear hunt with great result.
MacGregor-Lymans #47 shows a 400 cast with #2 alloy with a 2.530 OAL at 40 grains of RL-7 for a starting load at 1542 fps and 14,000 CUP with a "Max Load" of 48+ at 1875 fps and 26,300 CUP.
Remington 9-1/2 primers(Large Rifle)
A 24 and 26 inch barrel. They don't say which they used on this load but it is a SAAMI load and very mild in the pressure department.
