A sabot for my 30-30 to shoot .224 bullets????

This is would be an incredible varmint/small game bullet if it had really good accuracy.
The ad also touts "up to 3500 fps in the 30-30" DANG!!!!

Anyone else every hear of this?

Re: A sabot for my 30-30 to shoot .224 bullets????

I don't know if they're still in production, but about 25 years ago Remington offered their "accelerator" cartridges with a sabot, and .30-30 was one of the cartridges so offered, along with the .308 Win and the .30-06 as I recall. May have been some others too.

Velocity was phenomenal, but accuracy was mediocre, so the concept died out. Heck though, if you've already got a .22 centerfire you load for, it might be fun to try a few bullets through the .30-30, just for giggles and to see what it does to a chuck!

My shooting partner has some of those in 30-06. He also told me that they were illegal today because there is no ballistics left on the bullet. Have you heard of this? He loved shooting them.

Wisconsin Cartridge Company still carries them.

I've never seen the need, you need to reload them so you are a reloader.

You can get 86 gn jacketed bullets for a 30-30, 100s, 110s, and so on. Berrys plated 110s are cheap in bulk, you can get cast bulk very reasonable priced.

If the quest for speed is what you want, I'm sure the above jacketed will do it better and more accurately than any saboted bullet.

Papajohn should wgt in this as he has reloaded a few of them.

There are no issues with "illegality" of a saboted bullet. They just weren't popular, which was the reason why they are scarce today.

I was looking on Midway at the various varmint bullets in .224, sure is tempting.
Sure would make a great "chuck" round that would do +3000 fps.
Anyone play around with the sabots yet?

Re: A sabot for my 30-30 to shoot .224 bullets????

I got into playing around with these last summer, lots of snags along the way. For one thing, the data supplied by EABCO for the 30-30 was so far off I wasted a LOT of time and had to start over twice. Seating the sabots to a consistent length with even neck tension is more than a little tricky, some might say darned near impossible. The best accuracy I got was about 1.5" at 50 yards, but I cut my experiments short to play with other projects, it was eating up a lot of time I didn't have to waste, with all the constant chronographing of each test batch. I also had problems with poorly made sabots, the consistency left a lot to be desired. Here are some photos from last summer.

This is a round of Remington Accelerator ammo in 30'06, notice the different sabot...............

I'm not saying don't waste your time with them, but don't believe that you're just going to load up a batch of ammo and go shoot some varmints at 200 yards, either. I experimented with several powders and velocity ranges once I stopped using the data I was provided, and started using some common sense. And don't bother spending ten bucks on their black plastic seating die, it and the shellholder are useless junk.

I still have several dozen, and may try to resume my testing at some point. Swany warned me about shooting plastic-coated bullets in a steel barrel at high velocity, might be some reason for that, if I know him. I'm guessing he's played with this a bit in his murky past, but he's not confessing anything yet. Maybe he wants to see how bad I can get in over my head. Wouldn't be the first time.........and won't be the last.

Re: A sabot for my 30-30 to shoot .224 bullets????

    "Ah hee hee hee" Renfreed

Them things shoot well in a smoothbore shot gun but give the same general pattern out of a rifle.

Want good accuracy with them try around 6gns of Unique.

Much faster and that plastic kind of peels with the force against the rifling leaving some nasty crap behind just to enchance your shotgun pattern a little more.

Try them at low velocity you'll get good accuracy but I thought the whole idea was to make them go fast?

If you had a special 30-30 with at least a 1-14 twist two groove bbl from an old springfield you might have a chance but then if you rebbld one you would likely make it a .219 and shoot without the sabots.

Back when I benchrested I had a friend that worked at an injection molding place that made .22 to 30 cal sabots, gave me a gallon bucket full of them, at the time I was shooting a pair of .222s, 22-250 and a .22 K hornet so I had a range of bullets, and time on my hands. add a 30-30 94 win.

Bottom line, don't waste your time and money but just get a few lighter varmit bullets for your 30-30. The majority of them sabots went in my wood stove, yes they will burn.

LOL I bet the aroma wasn't quite apple chips. Ok then, I won't bother. I'll stick to my 7.0 gr of CLAYS under the 100 gr carbine HJ. Does about 1500 fps and has hardly any recoil. 'Nuff for me!
