    4570 imr4198

Hi everyone, I started reloading for a new 1895SBL. I'm loading oregon trail laser cast 405grain. Ask asked oregon trail to send me their load data, I will try to post below. But they have their starting load at 22g of IMR4198 and max of 31. My lee book states 30-32 for "trapdoor" My question is, I started another thread on here for good 4570 loads and many guys came back recommending anywhere from 38-41 grain which is way over the publish load data I have seen. Any comments? Is it safe for me to go that high? Can someone post published data for me to for that high? Last thing I want to do is destroy this gun.... destroying my head comes in a close second.

I would strongly suggest buying at least one reloading manual. Lee reloading manual or Lyman are good choices to start. There they have many loads listed for the 45-70 broken down into three categories, trap door, marlin type rifles, ruger #1 type. I would suggest he folks at Lasercast are going to come down on the very conservative loading scale so one size fits all kind of like factory ammo is scaled for the trap door loads. Invest in a few manuals and that might give you more comfort and knowledge of acceptable loads for you 45-70. you can load it up a lot hotter than the 41 gr with 4198 and really knock some slobber around.

Are you wanting Trapdoor loads or Marlin loads?

With a 400gr Jacketed bullet Marlin loads start at 43.0grs and finish at 46.0grs of IMR-4198

I've loaded 40.0grs of IMR4198 and 405's, shoots good, not overly abusive and safe.

Using a 405-grain cast bullet (and Starline brass and CCI #200 primers) I shoot 39.0 grains of IMR 4198 out of a Model 1985. This is within (between) the "starting load" and the "Do Not Exceed" load for the 1895 and a 405-grain cast bullet in the Lyman 49th edition. As mrguvna has stated, obtain some manuals if you haven't already. You can also get load data online from powder manufacturers (Hornady Reloading Data is one example).

I'm reloading .45/70 for a Browning Hi-Wall so my load data would be considered excessive for a lever action... I do have the Loadbook for .45/70 Gov't and can relay the info via this thread this evening. "Trapdoor loads" were designed for actions far weaker than a modern Marlin lever action using modern steel.

I recommend you have a look at the manufacturers loading data.

I have the lee book and they don't state a load for 1895 action for 405GRAIN cast lead with IMR4198.... that's the particular combination I am looking for as many people on this forum highly recommend that powder for 405 lead. Again, my conundrum is finding "published data" that states the high charges of 40grains and above that people are stating they use....

I not 100percent sure of what velocity you're trying to achieve or what use you have in mind. But I would tend to believe that if you haven't been able to find that powder and bullet combo in a few different places it might not be the best choice of powder. The load data that you shared from the bullet manufacturer shows what they found.
im not sure where I read it, Garrett cartridges website I believe, but over 1600 fps and your penetration might start decreasing with added velocity. I've seen similar things recently on YouTube where someone shoots similar bullets at different velocity with less penetration from the faster.

Driving a plainbase bullet too fast will result in miserable accuracy. The 22 grain charge of 4198 will be dirty burning and have wide swings in velocity. Pick a 13-1400 fps load and call that good. Pass on the higher velocity loads.
