Need 255 gr. 45 colt load data

I have a 452-255-RF Lee mold that I wanted to try in my 1894 Limited 45 Colt 24”barrel. I have done some checking on this sight and what seems to be the best is 2400 or Unique but I can’t find any of the powder locally. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have H110, H335 and Reloaded 7 and several other rifle powders.

    Thanks

    Hey,

Hope this helps, it doesn't have your exact powders, but it does have a variety.

Of the powders you say you have only H110 is suitable, and then in only full power loads, as it's not a reduced load powder. The other two powders are too slow burning. What else do you have?

Thanks for the reply Dill45 and 35remington. All of the other powders that I have are too slow. I usually load rifle only. I have the H110 for loading for my 336-44. I would use it on the 45 until I can get a better suited powder but can’t find what would be a safe starting point and about what the max load would be.

    Nighfisher,
Although REL7 is a bit slow, a capacity load (28-30 grs.) in a .45 Colt rifle barrel worked aok and turned up close to 1,500 f.p.s. with good accuracy in my testing.

Was that with a 255gr cast bullet?

    Nightfisher,
Oops! Forgot to mention ........it was a 265 gr. Keith type but your 255 Lee would work just fine.

What would be a good starting point for the 255 gr with RL-7?

Re: Need 255 gr. 45 colt load data

At some point, maybe you need to buy a powder that will give adequate velocities at lower charge weights.

John's advice is quite good; I've tried loads of case filling capacity with RL7 myself in other cartridges and it works fine when it seems otherwise too slow. (Not in the 45 Colt, however, but I've no reason to doubt its effectiveness here when it works in other, similar applications).

For high volume shooting in the 45 Colt at some point you need to be investing in a powder that gets equivalent velocities in lower charge weights. For maximum speeds you might also go back to H110, and for just plinking perhaps something like Unique or similar that will use about a third the charge weight of Reloder 7.

John's telling you (not stepping on his toes, here!) that 28-30 grains is the place to be. Using Reloder 7 is a bit like using 4198 in the 45 Colt - rather slower than the usual powder selections for the 45.

It will be somewhat dirtier burning, but I really don't care about such things all that much. What matters more is how it shoots.

Re: Need 255 gr. 45 colt load data

Thanks 35remington. I have decided to wait until I can get a more suitable powder. I started checking through some reloading equipment and supplies that I bought a couple of years ago and found two boxes of 230 gr. cast bullets. There is about a thousand of them plus what I have 200 that I have cast myself so I just as well wait and do it right the first time and get a better suited powder. I just used to using rifle powder and not used to the pistol powder. I am planning on trying Alliant 2400 powder unless you have a better suggestion.

Thanks for the help leading me in the right direction.
