Trail Boss data for .38spl / .357 rifle

Did a search but nothing I found seemed to answer this, so can anyone tell me what starting-max loads are good for this powder under a 158 gr. cast bullet? Hodgdon's has TB pistol data, but nothing for this rifle caliber. TIA.

Use the pistol data. Loads will be the same whether they are to be used in a pistol or a carbine.

Trail Boss data for .38spl / .357 rifle

Thanks. Can I assume (never a safe practice) the same is true of Win231 as well? They show lots of pistol data for that powder as well, but only 44-40 rifle data.

Trail Boss data for .38spl / .357 rifle

All my exprerience with Trail Boss has been with .32 Long Colt, .32 H&R Mag, and .44 Rem Mag, all with lead bullets. ANY COMPRESSION OF THIS POWDER WHATSOEVER CAUSES CHRONOGRAPH DATA TO GO CRAZY AND ACCURACY TO GO OUT THE WINDOW. Be happy with the black powder range of velocities produced with this powder; that is what it was designed for.

Trail Boss data for .38spl / .357 rifle

I recently (last 6 months) read an article in G&A or something about someone using Trail Boss for shooting cast bullets out of his .30/06.

It stated in the article you could call the makers of Trail Boss () and they would give you load data for a specific cartridge.

"I am the weapon. My gun is only a tool."

"When your ambush is going well, your about to be attacked."

Where in my OP did you get the idea I was unhappy with any aspect of TB, or intended to compress it? I just want rifle data that is accurate and safe. Sorry, but your reply makes no sense at all.

I guess I will have to call Hodgdon

No, you cannot assume that .44-40 rifle data is safe in pistols. You could assume that the pistol data would be safe in a rifle. The older dual purpose cartridges sometimes had high velocity rifle loadings

Sorry, Huggybear. Your original post stated that you were seeking "starting-max loads". I meerly wanted to inform you of my findings when approaching "max-loads" with Trail Boss. I'll try not to be so helpful in the future.

Which may be why Hodgdon does not list any rifle data for TB. They do list H110 (same as W296) with the same data for both gun types in .357 mag. I'm about to shoot 21 gr. of W296 under a 125gr. Hornady XTP in my Ruger GP-100 revolver; it will be interesting to see how that load shoots in my 1894CB.

No problem. I'm on information overload as it is, and when it all runs together for me, I know it's time to walk away from the reloading bench and bag a quick nap.
