    Loading down .300 win mag

Hey guy and gals. My wife got a doe draw this year and I would like to load down my 300 mag for her. My goal is accuracy out to 100 yds or so on mule deer with little or no kick at all so that she will enjoy the experience. Any suggestions would be great on bullet weight and powder to use. I am out of the reloader 22 that I was using so it is open as to what powder I will buy.

    Loading down .300 win mag

Ape, I can't help you here, but am very curious to hear what is said. I have a 338, and downloading effectiveness is not too great. A smaller bullet with a lower end charge seems to work OK, but have not tried the H4895 like Hodgden suggests for those guns where this powder is appropriate. Seems to like the higher pressure better. Good luck.

    Loading down .300 win mag

Ape, I did just a little research last night, and found they do list 150gr. bullet with H4895. I am sure I remember seeing somewhere in that new Hodgden manual that these can be down loaded about 33%. Call Hodgden and they can help you with a safe dose. Not sure if it will get the kick quite down to where you want.

Thanks Doc I will do this and give it a try. Hopefully it will reduce the kick enough for her to enjoy shooting it.

    Loading down .300 win mag

    ape -

We've had very very good results in downloading most of the magnum cartridges - 300wm, 300wsm, 338wm etc but we've been turning them into CAS class cartridges [shooting pb lead at 900-1600fps]. The 300 win mag data is already on our website [url below, look under levergun data/studies], the 300wsm and 338 are still to come. With pb bullets one is limited to 22-24000 CUP, which generally translates to 1500fps-ish, which does not make a deer cartridge. On the otherhand, our 338 data was with gc lead bullets, where the 22k limit doesn't exist and where one can up the velocity until one gets the desired/necessay mv/energy. Over and above the lead, we've tried jacketed in the 300wm and wsm, but didn't find anything that shot well (< 2 moa). On the otherhand, the 200gr hornady from the 338 at 1600-1800fps was a tack driver (10 at 50y into .6"). We didn't go any higher than that velocity-wise, but if one were to add another 200fps and with a 200gr bullet, that would put it into a better than a 30-30 class, which would make a deer round. If you're interested in such, post back, and I'll dig up the load information.

hope that helps, and do shoot straight,

gmushial i am interested in what you have I was thnking last night that I could just go out and buy her another rifle maybe a 6.5x55 or a .270 something like that. I still might but it would be a little cheaper to reload. Looking forward to what you have. You can email me direct if you wish apester@telus.net

hi apester, found this in the Modern reloading by richard lee..
    300 Winchester mag:
168 grain lead using ACC XMP5744
    starting at 26 grains@1728fps
    max at 35 grains @2216fps
    min OAL 3.315
    large rifle primer

if ya want you can try a few of my 165 grain lead( no gas check though) to see how accurate they are at your given fps range.--i have about 80 left for my .308 cal.........these would be a blast to shoot i would think??....larry

    Loading down .300 win mag

Thanks Larry. I haven't even looked in my loading book by Lee yet as I was hoping to get some ideas first. Iguess I should get of my butt and do a little home work of my own as well. Where did you get the 168 grainers from? Are those the ones from the bullet barn ? How do you like them for accuracy in the .308?

apester.....i have only used them with 3.5-6.0 grains of bullseye.........velocitys from 1175, down to about 780fps......i settled on 4.5 grains( velocity@949 avg)---and yes it is a tack driver@ 25 yards, and quiet!!....I call the load my .308 "chicken"!!...this is the load my wife has been practicing with for her upcoming doe hunt in November., plus will be used for any "chickens" we come across while hunting--well marked with black felt pen!!......(of course, i have my own 45-70 "chicken" load----4.5 grain bullseye pushing a 350 grcast @635fps and quiet).....i , like you, want to find a lighter load for deer for the mrs, prob 150-180 grain jacketed@ about 1800-2000fps--- have about 3 months to find one so i'm not in any hurry.......the mrs knows how tho use the .308 browning micro-medallion now, so using the 165 "bullet barn" @.309 dia hardcast has been a good(cheaper) practice bullet.!! ......larry

ps if i had the right powder(ie$$$$$$) i would jackup the velocities of the 165 to see if it is accurate at 100 or so yards!!---now if i could only get the OT like you guys over there!! :P
