    Paper patch lube..............JPW?

    Folks,

I'm new to this paper patching idea too. I've been seeing every lube idea passed around here with good results.

I've played with Johnson's Paste Wax on cast bullets and polishing the inside of a rifle and pistol barrel to reduce friction and leading both.

Has anyone tried using JPW on their paper patches? Rifle, or pistol? I'm just curious. Everything I've shot through rifle or pistol, cleaned up with just a patch when I used JPW. I imagine it should work, in theory at least, with paper patching.

    Comments?

I use litium grease and I have used SPG lube and both work well. What you want is something that will not only lube the paper and reduce friction in the barrel but also waterproof it to a degree.

After the patch is dry on my bullet, I rub it with a light coat of Rooster liquid lube. It gives a nice, non-greasy coat of lube and the patch still comes off at the muzzle. I settled on it because I do not have to worry about the patch lube contaminating the powder charge. Some of my reloads sit around for a few years.

powder contamination is another concern but one other is the exposed paper picking up dirt. I make sure my papers look clean before I insert the cartride in to the rifle and wipe them if needed.

Any wax build-up problems? Any left over should push out each time, Hmmmm interesting. I use turtle wax to remove rust from guns.

No build up as all I'm doing is using the wax as a lube to go through my push through sizing dies and when it is sized it is either impregnated in the paper ( not much ) or is sheared off and left at the entrance of push through die. the water proofing is just a plus of the operation and very light .

I'm getting ready to start my season of reloading as soon as possible. I have been busy and in the middle of making a new reloading bench and cleaning of my shop.

    Re: Paper patch lube..............JPW?

My first batch was lith. grease, bee'swax and JPW, seem to work ok but a little sticky. My latest is spray on case lube with a big dollup of Lee alox. Put it in a little bottle and shook it until mixed. The case lube disolved the alox and it dries on the pp bullets real well. I've been applying it before I clip the tails and setting them up to dry on their nose. If that sounds dumb but seems to work pretty well with my limited knowledge. I don't size before or after patching cause my 95's barrel is pretty large. The bullets run .463-.464 before seating in the neck sized cases. Any ideas how I can improve on my process. Last test was 1.75" group at 100yds. I think I can improve on my shooting and tighten it up. Thanks for your help. IJ

As long as they chamber you should be fine, but consistency is they key. Each bullet should weigh as close to being the same and diameter is critical. Black powder was not as critical as smokeless when being weighed out, I weigh out each load when using smokeless. 1.75" groups at 100 yards is not bad depending on conditions, windy... and as long as the shots are stringing up/down.
