Have you folks seen it? It's a slight redesign of the Huntsman that will not require the Yellow Federal Form. It's a fine looking inline. It uses a shorter receiver and a longer forearm to preclude barrel swapping. Check it out on h&r's website. Think it's www.hr1871.com

Ok - so what makes it a "non-firearm"?

I don't see a huge difference in the basic function of the rifles, but I could probably learn to like lobbing half inch projectiles, especially if it lengthens my deer season!

Any guesses as to the price? I don't even know what the Huntsman cost.

It's a muzzle stuffer vice one that shoots cased ammunition. Bows, spears, and black powder are considered primative weapons and are in a separate class from "firearms". Plus they lengthen the hunting season!

The Huntsman can be re-barreled for centerfire or shotgun. The Sidekick can not.Muzzel Loaders are not considered firearms by BATF.That in a nut shell is the answer.

The Huntsman is all over the net selling for around $150.00. Don't think it can be beat in an American made muzzleloader.

    Here is a good question:

If a Huntsman can be had for $145 (saw that on-line), and can take all the approved barrels that NER offers as an accessory, and a .22 Hornet barrel costs $82 from NEF - then I have a muzzleloader and rifle for a total of say $230.

But my local Walmart price for a .22 Hornet is $212 tax and title included. The price of a Huntsman 24" blue barrel from NEF is $79.

Something just does not seem right. Am I just being dificult about this? Does someone know first hand if rifle barrels can be purchased for the Huntsman reciever?

IIRC rifle barrels can not be fixed to shotgun actions (for whatever reason). Also new barrels must be fitted at the factory to the rifle for the first time. They may sell the barrels to smiths, but I am unaware of sales to private individuals.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to debunk my statements.

    What is IIRC?

Is the Huntsman action the same as the shotgun action? I certainly wish NEF had an e-mail address for customer service.
