Hi members ,maybe some one could help me.On my 3006 xl 7 rifle, wanting to no if the barrel nut is right hand thead or left hand. This is if the barrel is faceing me.Do I turn it right or left to loosen it.Also what size of torque head wrench do I need to loosen the barrel lug screw.Or is it an allan head wrench I need. Thanks in advance.Chester 35.
Righty tighty, lefty loosey. So if the muzzle is pointed at you, counter clock-wise.
Not sure what you are talking about with the "barrel lug screw"? pic?

Imaguy3.Yes I am talking about the front screw that tightens the barrel down to the stock. What size allan wrench or torque head fit these screw heads. The wreches I have seem to be either under size or over size.If I can get the front screw out I think I will hacksaw a slot in the head and have a little better chance at torqueing the screw down down. The head isnt reamed out,but I think over all it would work out for the better.Ok whateing for your answer. Thanks.Chester 35.
wow....
This isn't meant as a slight,
If removing the stock is this much of a production for you, you should re-think your ability to do a barrel change.

Thanks for the reply Darkker.I am not thinking of changeing the barrel.I am thinking I mite put a small piece of metal under the,''I call it the barrel lug'' to raise the barrel just a little to free float it ,just to try and see if it would shoot better before removeing the presure points at the front of the fore end of the stock. The hexs on the bolt or screw witch ever you call it,I call it the barrel lug screw, the one that holds the barrel down in the stock,I think have the corners rounded off a bit and are not holding tight enough to turn the screw out.I have standard wrenchs and was wondering if maybe they are metric. That why I was asking.Anyways no harm done. Thanks for your reply.Have a good day.Chester 35
I have no idea what the size is off the top of my head. I just tried allen wrenches until I found one that fit. I'll look tomorrow when I get home from work.
And no, hacking a slot into the screw will not make it work better. Buying the correct size allen wrench will make it work better.

Thanks for the reply guys.As for the proper size wrench,in this case either a torx or allan wrench, the corners in the head of the take down screw is kinda buggered so I will find some thing close and file it so as it is tight enough to get the screw out,it must be pritty soft meterial the screws are made from as it seem to take hardly nothing to round the corners off. Then again this was a used gun so maybe the first owner had a little something to do with it also. Also the extending of the barrel lug should not be any different than the way it came from marlin except it will raise the barrel up just a tad to allow the barrel to free float. You are still tightening it in the same place and at the same torx presure ''eg'' did someone on the board say around ''45'' inch pounds.Ow yes I am planning on getting a thomb hole stock from boyds some time down the road as soon as the better half cuts loose with some coin.Anyways thanks for the help and expertise.Guess Ill go now and have at it.Thanks again.Chester 35.
9/64 hex is what you need for the proper fit on the front take-down screw
