I hope you guys can help, My grand father past away and in his closet we found the malin rifle model 39. the but plate is broken but other than that it is a goo looking rifle. the serial number is h s 17235 and there is a star after model 39 * also the site has and ivory dort on it. If anyone can let me know the year it was made, and value would be great. I do plan on keeping it,

WOW! that is a nice looking rifle
the color case hardening on the receiver and octagon barrel are features found on model 39 and early versions of the model 39a
the model 39 replaced the model 92 and model 97 and was produced between 1922 and 1936 when it was replaced by the current model 39a
after WWII the receiver were blued instead of color case hardened
I am having a bit of trouble with your serial number, 17235 comes up as 1887 which is way to early, prefix "H" is 1951 prefix "S" is 58 or 59, both of which would be a model 39a the lever looks like the one on my 1902 model 1897, being squared where it meets the stock, the lever on my 1946 model 39a is round like all 39a's I have seen, so perhaps it could be a commemorative model ?
what are the barrel markings? that would help identify it, whatever it turns out to be that is one awesome beautiful rifle
Four on the floor & a fifth in my hand
gonna rock&roll ya to the promised land

OK upon further research the prefix HS was added in 1932 and indicate that the rifle was approved for high speed ammo
making yours manufactured between 1932 & 1936 the * indicated an exceptionally outstanding near perfect example as it left the factory, the early model 39 all came with a 24" octagon barrel and model 97 style lever
as far as value on that rifle, I would say the sky's the limit

Absolutely beautiful! I wish I could find one of those in my closet. There are new buttplates that can be bought for it. But if it was my gun I would look for an original to complete everything else original, on that gun.

The HS prefix stands for high speed ammo. And was only used on the 1932-38 Model 39's. The serial number range that have been reported for the HS prefix by Brophy (A well known Marlin export)was
HS 456 to HS 18784. So that would put yours in the 1937-38 time frame. There were no actual factory records keep, so that is about as close at I can get.

Forgot about the Star that might change the date a bit. I not an expert on 39's, so with others looking in the date might change a bit.

As to value I will let others help with that, but you can look one Gunbrokers.com and compare. Don't go by what people are asking, but by what they end up selling for.

New info found on other site. The new High number for the reported HS is HS20205. The numbers I gave before, were out of Brophys book from the 80's. There have been higher ones found since.

So that might put you in the 1935-36 like what
caferacer mentioned. All depending on how many were made each year.

IMO I'm glad to see you're keeping it. That is one to be handed down! If you take it to the range give a report.

Larry52: It may just be my eyes as the picture of the serial number is a
little blured to me . The Model 39 will be found to either have no pre-fix,
an S , or HS to the serial. Your post has h s but I cant seem to make
out the H in the picture all I see is the S as I mentioned this just may be
my eye's but it does make a difference as to your Model 39
