Very interesting. It never ceases to amaze me the things I learn on Marlinowners. So why is it called a bicycle gun?

    Re: Marlin Bicycle gun

I've held that one in my sweaty little hands..... It's in a local gun shop. Restoration looks good, but I dojn't know enough about 'em to know if it is truly an original bicycle rifle.

simangus - They were built short and intended to be carried on a bike along the top horizontal frame member, in a special soft case, IIRC.

    Re: Marlin Bicycle gun

Looking at the tape measure I'm gonna call b.s. on this one. Marlin did not make odd numbered lengths in any of their rifles. Everything was even inches. This one looks to be 16" to the end of the receiver. It should measure 16" to the end of the barrel, which is screwed into the end of the reciever making this one long by about 3/4". Plus it has the wrong butt-plate.
Of course all of this knowledge comes from reading Brophy's book cover to cover. I've never actually held a bicycle rifle in my hands....

Never studied the rimfires much, but I do know that you measure a Marlin barrel including the part that's threaded into the receiver.

For true barrel length I place a cleaning rod in barrel until it touches the bolt face with bolt closed.Mark cleaning rod ,then measure.
That GB auction gun doesnt look right to me either. Now,if it was cheap it would still be worth considering.Never pay top dollar for guns that dont appear correct.

    Re: Marlin Bicycle gun

Like I said - I haven't researched them enough to know if it really is a bicycle rifle or not - the buttplate definately isn't correct - I could easily believe it had been replaced sometime in it's past. But as a whole, it just doesn't look "right". For what it's worth - He's had it for sale for a loooong time.

    Re: Marlin Bicycle gun

PT Barnum was correct..........and this gun is nothing more than a "bubba" gun.

Too many obvious "red flags", but someone cut down the '97 barrel down to under 16" , crowned & blued the muzzle, did a Mickey Mouse refinish, wrong buttplate, put a 39A mag tube on it and calls it a "Bicycle" gun. Remember, "Knowledge is Power".
