I have recently acquired a Marlin 1893 in 30-30 with a s\n C96XX, for under $500 and was wondering if anyone could tell me the date of manufacture.
The bore is a little rough and was considering a rebore to 32 special or a reline.
any suggestions and if this is feasible and who would do this type of work?
The 1893 is not of collectible quality, but of shooter quality.

Dont know when it was made but John Taylor is the one I'd let rebore or reline anything I wanted done. http://www.johntaylormachine.com/

I would guess it to be post WWI, but without all the rollstamp markings I couldn't get any closer. Is it truly a 1893, or a Model '93? Not sure is it could be rebored to just .32-40, as it might need to go larger to .38-55 for a rebore. A reline is an option, and I too use John Taylor.

Thanks for the advise guys. The rifle is marked on top of tang 'MODEL 1893' with two holes for a tang sight and the receiver is also drilled and tapped on top with two holes about an 1 1/2 inches apart, the barrel is marked 'SPECIAL SMOKLESS STEEL' The barrel is round and 26 inches long with 30-30 marked up on top just in front of the receiver. All the blueing and case harden is gone. The bore has rifling but is a bit rough with some shine but not much and I thought a relining or a rebore to 32 special would be in order. Would like to know if anyone could tell me with this info about what year this was manufactured. S/N C96XX. Oh yes, the butt has a cresent butt plate with no tongue on top.
thanks again
I would shoot it with few different loads before having it rebored- it might shoot just fine. My dad and I have several 100+ year old leverguns with poor to fair bores and they still shoot OK.

Those holes in the reciever are for a Hepburn sight most likely. The "Marlin saftey" should be ahead of them. I think that puts it past 1904 but I'm not 100%.

It was most likely made around 1918 or so. After the Marlin Firearms company quit using the numbers only system at around 450000+ range they went to a letter prefix system. They started with A then B, C and then D.
