    Does Ruger SP 101 in .357 Mag shoot .38 Special?

    Hello to all:

    I understand the Ruger SP 101 in 357 Magnum do shoot 38 Special ammo.
    However, in this specs sheet doesn't say so: http://www.ruger.com/products/sp101/...eets/5719.html
    Would anyone confirm, please.

    Thanks a lot

    Yes, the SP101 357MAG will chamber and fire 38SPL's. That's one of the great things about revolvers chambered in 357MAG. The specials are so much more mild-mannered to shoot and they are usually cheaper to buy than magnums. Have fun!!

    Thank you Tedak, I thought so, but that specs sheet made me wonder. I also assume that 38 Sp + P isn't a problem either, right?

    Cheers

    No problem with +P's. The maximum average pressure of standard 38SPL is 17,000psi. 38+P's are a bit higher at 18,500psi. The 357MAG is rated at 35,000psi.

    Re: Does Ruger SP 101 in .357 Mag shoot .38 Special?

    It used to be much higher...........something along the lines of 46,000 CUP, before they were tamed down to save wear and tear on some of the revolvers, and to keep the Liability folks happy.

    If you don't regularly practice with hot 357 ammo, keeping warm 38's on hand is usually a much better idea. The difference in flash and blast makes the 38's far easier to hit with, especially when fast follow-up shots are needed.

    I have a Ruger SP-101 with a three-inch barrel, chambered in 357. It doesn't get fed much Magnum ammo, hot 38's are FAR easier to shoot comfortably. The first time I let my son shoot it, I put in four 38's, and one 357. When he touched off that last round the pained look on his face was readily apparent. As he handed it back to me he shook his head, and muttered, "That thing is...........a monster." I don't think he's shot it since.

    Re: Does Ruger SP 101 in .357 Mag shoot .38 Special?

    When I die, he gets everything. And he has no reason to snuff me for my stuff, I'm his meal ticket. I'm safe for now.

    Besides, he gets to shoot as often as he wants. Any gun, any caliber, any time. He's my shooting buddy. And that SP-101 is his Bed Gun. I have plenty..............no need to get selfish about it.

    BTW, that SP-101 has a special set of really soft, ergonomic grips, and it's STILL a beast with 357 loads.

    Re: Does Ruger SP 101 in .357 Mag shoot .38 Special?

    It'll shoot the 38's all day and night.

    As a general rule, most of the Mag revolvers and single shot rifles will shoot their shorter relatives. Not true for autoloaders. Manual mechanical feed (levers/pumps) guns will often work with 1 size difference, check barrel and manual on those beasties though.

    22LR->22Long->22Short
    357Max->357Mag->38Spl
    44Mag->44Spl
    460S&W->454Casull->45Colt
    327Fed->32H&R->32S&WLong->32S&WShort
    22Mag DOES NOT interchange with 22LR. Different width chambers.
