Howdy,
I have an H&R Huntsman for sale on this forum Trading Post. A member asked a question as to if the Huntsman can be shipped without using the services of an FFL due to the fact that the receiver is similar or the same as a NEF or H&R Shotgun. I had planned on shipping it directly to whoever bought it as in the current configuration, it is a Muzzle Loader and not regulated as a Firearm. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Except for very early Huntsmans which were muzzleloaders only, they are a firearm, they're on frames which can be fitted with centerfire barrels. You may be able to tell the older model by the firing pin which is huge in comparison to a modern firing pin which will be less than .100" in diameter, the frame opening where the barrel underlug fits is too narrow for a centerfire barrel, since yours is a .58 cal and was made in 1973, there's a good chance it is a ML only.

The S/N is AL2781XX, was that consistent for 1973 manufacture or was that the only year that model was made? I also measured the firing pin, it is about .190", the size of a percussion cap. Thanks for your help.

Tom,
I did a little research at GBO, the early 70's Huntsmans were available in .45 and 58 cal, as well as 12ga, they were muzzleloader only, yours was made in 1973, the serial number prefix AL denotes the year of mfr.
