Get a good scope on it, what's provided is not very durable. The Accu-trigger works, some folks have a problem adjusting to it, but my personal experience with them are good.

That rifle should be available in a full range of short-action calibers, and for varmints, I would go up to about .243.

They are basic rifles, very serviceable and generally very accurate.

The rifle is the same as any other Savage you would buy at another store or gun dealer. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. As Vic said though, the scope surely won't be of high quality and would be something to change out for reliability.

I bought a Savage model 10 the year before the Accu-Trigger came out. It is my son's deer rifle. It has had nothing but hand loads through it. It is very, very accurate. It is completely reliable. The trigger is good for a $279 rifle. The 3 position safety is a great feature- especially for a young hunter.

    Accuracy results at 100 yds-

One shot by me and one by my son when he was 14. It started out life with a Nikon 1.5-4.5x20 scope and now wears a cheap Simmons Deer Hunter scope 3-9x40- and that's what it had on when we shot these groups. The bullet we used most with this gun are 130 grain Barnes, the XLC XBT and the TSX.

Not long after my son and I shot these groups at 100 yds with our $279 gun there was a rifle review in American Hunter on the McMilXXX bolt action rifle with a price of over $3000.... it averaged groups of over 3"! For $3000?!?!?!! My son and I had a GOOD laugh thinking that for the same money we could have had 10 rifles that shot better than that.

I think these are great rifles period. Cost or value, rather, is just a plus.

I bought a Savage 12 package from Dick's in 2003. It was a .223 and came with a cheap Simmons 4-12X40 scope - Great rifle, acceptable scope and it cost me $250. Savage rifles are great and what you saved can buy a better scope.

I have bought a half dozen of these rifles over the past 10 years. Every one was capable of 1 moa with the right loads. Ive rebarreled 3 of them with the cheap a&b barrels that midway use to sell. Easy to change the barrel and set headspace. I rebarreled my wifes to 22-250 ackley and with the right handload it will shoot 1/2 " 5 shot groups at 100 yards.
I rebarreled another to 221 fireball, it would shoot 5 into 1/4" and 10 into 5/8". Very Very good accuracy potential!
Longest shot to date with the 22-250 ackley is a prairie dog at 750 yards. Sure it took 8 tries (dirt kept flying up on him with every shot, he didnt know what was going on) but I finally made contact.

I forgot to mention if you rebarrel to 221 fb or any 223 size case youll have to change the bolt head.

I dont know for sure but when I rebarreled to that size case I bought the small bolt head from midway and it was a savage part #. So I would assume it does.

Yeah, but note the date! Prices of a lot of things have gone up since then and the Savage bolt gun was just starting to get its reputation. Although, I'll have to admit, it was a heck of a deal then too.
