The answer is 'A'. The 30.06 is 0.3006" in diameter. There are 2.54 cm/inch, so 2.54x.3006=0.7635 cm or 7.635 mm.

I don't think so! Nice try but,

The groove diameter on a 30-06 rifle is .308 inch diameter. The 30-06 comes from the fact that the 30-06 evolved from the short-lived 30-03 originally chambered in the M1903 Springfield rifle. In spite of a new design the ballistics of the 30-03 showed little improvement over the Army's 30-30 Krag. When Germany came out with the Mauser in 8mm (7.92x57mm) shooting a 154 grain spitzer bullet at nearly 2900 fps in 1905. This was a impressive velocity in that era and the rest of the world took notice; and the US Military refined the 30-03 into the 30-06 shorly after (in 1906). Thus the 30-06 designation represents 30 caliber & 06 for year of development (1906).

    The 30-06 is a 30 caliber caliber rifle with a .308 groove just like all the other 30 caliber rifles (30 M1, 30-30, 300 Savage, 30-40 Krag, 308 Win, 300 Mags, etc.).

    From the Lyman Reloading Handbook 49th edition - The .308 Win (7.62 X 51MM) (7.62 NATO). .30 x 2.54 = 7.62 for bore caliber!

7.62mm from the diameter of the bore at the lands - - 0.300" diameter converts to 7.62mm...

63mm from the nominal case length measurement...

    Didn't google it, either...

I have a pre war Mannlicher-Haenel New Model Sporting Rifle that is chambered in 30-06. The caliber designation on the rifle is simply 7.6 S. Presumably this was to mean 7.6mm Springfield.

Its a rare beast. Slick action, beautiful gun.
