The WV DNR is reporting that the deer kill in WV is down over 40% for the first 2 days. Some check stations report numbers down in excess of 50%. The weather is supposed to be bad Thursday (traditionally the 2nd highest kill day) and Friday. Today, Wed., the weather is good, so the kill may pick up. I'm getting ready to go to grandma's house so I'm not in the woods today. But Monday & Tues. there was not a deer killed in the area I was hunting. I saw 9 does Monday and 8 on Tues, not a single buck. I know they are in that area because I saw 4 different bucks during my pre-season scouting.
It was 72 degrees and sunny on Monday (I think I got sunburned!), and it rained Tues until 1 pm so there were no hunters in the woods. I'm hoping to get back on Friday & Saturday and try again. I think the weather kept hunters out of the woods, and the hard winter kept the numbers of deer down and those are both contributing to the lower than normal kill. I will probably take a doe later this week if I get the chance, to fill one of my doe tags. I had ample opportunity to take a doe Mon & Tues. but where I'm hunting does aren't allowed until Thursday of this week.

I'll be trying to get to Sleepy Creek Sun and Monday. Sunday is a no hunt day, so I'll be looking for where I want to be at dawn.

Halwg - it's ZERO here this morning in central Washington. Brrrr.
Get after those deer!
Hang in there Hal! Another way of looking at it is if the kill is down 40-50% in the first half of the week and the weather is going to be bad on Thursday, it leaves more deer for you to hunt on the weekend! Good luck!

NE check-in numbers were up for the opening weekend said Game & Parks. The reason they gave were that most crops were out and the weather was favorable (although NOT in the East).
Big Med: I have wondered about your zone for some time G & P have flooded that zone with antlerless tags to the tune of ~20k per year for the better part of 10 years. The reason for this was to reduce the population and it has worked but really only in the most heavily hunted portions of that zone. The parts of the zone with limited access (around towns, the river, sparsely hunted private land, you get the picture) still have a population problem.
So..... We moved north Had 8 hunters with 16 tags put down 12 deer on a 1/4 section. We targeted does but in reality half the count were bucks and 3 of those were buttons We are still trying to educate everyone on the positive identity aspect of shooting does.
Here's our 3 mid-week does:
I took the one on the left with my 308MX - shot was a little high but it was a DRT
