I have a custom gun on a remington action, it is chambered for a 7mm stw

I have only shot it a dozen times or so.

I am giving some thought to having it rebarreled for a 458 Lott.

What do you think about having this cal. coupled to the push feed action?

My intended use would be for bear in the far north and Moose here in Montana, ( if I ever get drawn.)

It sounds good to me. I am working on a .416 Taylor on a Mark X control feed action. The only time I see a real advantage with the control feed is on DG when stuff gets rough. Harry Selby used a push feed for years in .458 WM with no problems. reflex264

Why on earth would you need a 458 for bear or moose? Other than just wanting one.

Montana-If I was to get a big boomer the .458 Lott would be my choice and to answer Marlin Mike,Just because I want one...Why..Hell:I don't know. There is nothing I will ever hunt the .300 Win Mag or the 45-70 will not take care of nicely.

I have never understood the big Boomers like the Weatherby's of .340 and up when other lighter recoiling firearms will do the same thing other than the misteek of owning such a fine weapon just like myself and you wanting a .458 Lott in North America as it is sure not needed to take Moose or Bear.

The Big Bore Bug has bitten!!!!!!

Years ago I met a fellow hunting who hunted Maryland and Virginia for whitetail and black bear... With his .458 Win mag Model 70!

He'd ordered the rifle from Winchester for his once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa. Killed his cape buff, along with everything else he pointed the .458 at, then came home. He considered the rifle too important a part of his big African hunt to part with and developed some lighter 350 grain loads for it. Had a hoot hunting whitetail and black bear for many years with that big blaster. I shot it a few times, recoil wasn't bad with the reduced loads, but brutal with the factory 510 grain soft-nose stuff. I imagine the .458 Lott will have even more punch, on both ends!

Why not? The purists will crucify you for building a DG rifle on a push-feed action, but Remington 700's have been used to hunt all sorts of dangerous game including Alaskan brownies, the African big 5, and terrorists too...

    Regards, Guy

    Marlin Mike,

    You sound like my wife.

Both of you are more practical than me for sure.

I have been carring my marlin 45/70 more and more and plan on using it this year hunting elk. I use it as my saddle carry all the time. At base camp it is always in reach. I have converted many of my guide friends into thier pc. to carry.

Like I said in my earlier post I have this 7mm STW that I just do not use.
My thoughts were to convert it to somthing that I might.

Ok, I will be honest here. I do not need it. I just want it

    I'm curious.

If there is a manufacturer who sells the 458 Lott, is there any saving by rebarreling as opposed to buying a new rifle? Wouldn't you have to be lucky to have the exact same barrel contour (that otherwise would mean stock work, and more $$$)? It's not likely to be just a matter of screwing on a new barrel, in other words.

I'm not accustomed to modestly priced gunsmiths or rifle barrels either (around here, that is). That usually means unless the wood is true fancy grade and the action especially valuable, it's cheaper to buy a new rifle than rebarrel.

Maybe you fellows on the south side of the line have a good thing going for you!

I have a very good relationship with a rifle builder. As a matter of fact I am baby sitting his .264 WM built on a FN right now. I get very discounted rates for working up loads for him. I just bought a mint Mark X action from him for a little of nothing. He has a Santa Barbara magnum NOB in the white I am working on getting. It is nice getting exactly what you want built when the price is right. Besides if he fouls up my .416 I keep his .264 reflex264

pushfeed for varmints, controlled feed for hanging upside down from a tree while you're shooting that grizz that wants to eat you. pushfeed are wonderful field squirrel rifle actions. and if you want a lot then a 458 sounds good to me if the cartridge doesn't fall out when you're trying to shoot that cape buf that wants to do the pl ferdanand shuffle on you. and what about the follow up shot you need and the cartridge is swelt into the chamber from unexpected pressure. Ya gotta be able to muscle some things arount. Life is optional, BeastLever
