NC has the "HONOR?" of having the most Copperhead bites in the USA. Over the last 40 years of recording the copperhead leads all other poisonous snake bites in NC at 64% of the total number of bites. One of our employees arrived at work at 530AM and found a monster copperhead that was laying right on the sidewalk at the main entrance to the building. The largest copperheads are the males and they grow 40+ inches here in NC. Over the last 40 years of recording the copperhead leads all other poisonous snake bites in NC at 64% of the total number of bites. I was the Environmental Health and Safety Manager and they called me from one of our other buildings to check it out. The head on the snake was gone and I was told it was taken by someone to keep the skull as a souvenir. When I measured the body it was 39 inches and the head had to be another 4 to 5 from the description I was given. One of the guys told me the head was as big as his fist. All I know is the body of that sucker was as big as by biceps and let me tell you that my thumb to middle finger does not go half way around my biceps when relaxed! We had a lot of woods around the 3 of our buildings and lakes within a couple hundred yards so the habitat was there for them. Over 5 years I had to clear out about 20 copperheads from our buildings, mostly little ones about a foot long. I'm retired now so they are someone else's problem now!
Before I let the grandkids out in the back yard I always take a walk around to check the area. My yard is only 80 x 140 feet so not a lot to check out.

That one is a monster for sure. I ran one about the size of the smaller one out of a fence row yesterday as I was cleaning it out to make repairs. I let him get away.
Man are you lucky to have some nice snakes like that around!!!
Killed a couple 47" where I bowhunt in October and November, also some cottonmouths. Don't be surprised when you see that 4 footer
These new snake protection laws I think are for politicians!
Looks like two good snakes to me

Its much less dangerous to protect them if you remove the head like that.
That's what I do with them down here. They are all saved (protected) in the same place.
Oh! I use my Marlin Hoe w/52" handle.....large caliber.

A man was telling me yesterday about a rattler he cut the head off of and his dog was messing around by the head and got bit. Just because the head is off they will still bite.
rattler and copperhead skins make awesome hatbands for your cowboy hat. For years my hat had a band made from a Mojave rattlesnake skin. Looka really cool if you leave the rattle on it ....Mike
I know a guy that had a rattler hatband with the rattle on it. Couldn't stay on a horse.
