Would you take this shot with your Levergun?

Grouse season is open here in Idaho during Rifle season and alot of people use .22's or there Rifle to shoot the heads off of Grouse while hunting. The shotgun is the gun of choice of-course but would you take this shot with your lever-gun?

I have hunted Spruce Hens (aka Stupid Chickens) in Alaska with a 22 pistol. I'd have no problem hunting Ruffed grouse with my 39A.

Again, I am reminded of the movie True Grit, when Glen Campbells character blasts the turkey with a Sharps cavalry carbine  Only if my lever gun was a .17 hmr or a .22. I would like to have some of the breast left to eat after the shot.

I might eat grouse if I had my 45-70. I would prefer to use either a cast 385 grain RN ahead of 30.0 IMR 4198 or, even better, a 45-70 shot load which have worked well on ptarmigan at close range even in the rifled barrel. Of course one of my .22 lever guns would be even better suited.

I used to load shot loads for my 45-70 and carried a few with me when big game hunting. Never shot bird with them but they were murder on rabits. The pattern is doughnut shaped so you aim slightly of center.reflex264
