How to fill a hole in buttstock?

All, I had drilled a hole in the butt of the gun to insert a new recoil bad but the genius that I am did not drill the hole straight, it is off by about 1/16-1/8 inch. Would it be possible to just glue in a wooden dowel in the hole and then redrill a new one even if I have to drill into the dowel? Thanks.

It can be done like that. A couple of things to consider; when you use a plug, if it has different hardness or density characteristics than the surrounding wood, the bit may wander into or away from where you want it to go. Use a sharp bit (one made specifically for wood if possible), chuck it short to give it as much rigidity and support as possible, and don't feed the bit too fast. If all else fails, just drill the hole big enough and then plug it so that the screw hole will all be in the same piece of wood. (I would be inclined to make my own plug for this since many commercial dowels these days are some type of soft, rather spongy imported wood rather than a good hardwood like the birch dowels which used to be common.)

Ditto. I need to perform the same operation on a rifle I bought with a homemade recoil pad installation.

You could also whittle a walnut plug that fits rather tightly, throw a little wood glue in the hole, and drive the new plug in with a hammer. That way the bit doesn't want to wander off.........

That's not a bad idea, but one caution. Don't get it too tight or the glue can cause a Hydralic Split.
Leave a relief for the excess glue to run out.
My first woodworking project called for plugs over screws and I put glue in the holes and drove dowels in and split several pieces.

Its an epoxy made especially for bedding gun actions. I might be tempted to drill the holes you have out bigger & fill with acraglass. Once cured drill new holes & act like nothing happened. Course I'd experiment on something else first.
It gets pretty hard but I think a screw would cut it.

How to fill a hole in buttstock?

Good replies here. I'll confirm that AcraGlas works quite well in this role, with 2 caveats -- take your time working it into the hole to make sure it's completely filled, and give it plenty of time to cure before drilling. AcraGlas is one of those things I keep on hand alwasy and, with a bit of imagination, it's amazing how much you can do with it.

I figure that using the Acraglass Ken mentions and a toothpick to make sure it is settled in and worked really good into the drilled hole just might be the ticket and much easier than going with the wooden dowel method. BUT I am not so sure.

Someone please be the guinea pig and let us know how it works out eh?
