Eaglesnest... Your project is AWESOME. Your harvesting the lumber and milling it with a chain saw essentially, not to mention the design effort, is astounding. I started a project in Northern Idaho, about 30 miles south of the Canadian border back in 02. Drew it on the computer like you although not anything as professional.. and poured the basement on a two week vacation that year. But we had logcrafters do our spruce logs and then took over again after they were set. My wife and I bucked in all the windows and doors on the next vacation (set the last door in the headlights at 2am and left at 6am for Spokane to catch a place back to OKC). I plugged away on vacations till 2005 when I retired, at which time I moved in and worked an it by myself for months at a time before going home. I harvested Eastern Red Cedar (aromatic cedar) here in Oklahoma and had it milled here to finish out all the inside. I live in it now about six months of the year (just finished the basement finally last spring). After all that work I'm even more impressed knowing you did it all from scratch in a far more primitive (meant in a good way) environment than I did... and you did the shell - which REALLY is the hard part. My hat's off to you my man. OUTFRICKINGSTANDING!!!! SgtDog

Thanks for the kind words Mr Merde and SgtDog0311! I wish I could be up there more this summer working on it but am doing most of my work here in Juneau converting our 50 year old house into a duplex. We are going up there in a few days depending on the weather will take my 20 foot boat up, or if no go on the weather take the ferry up. There is no road out of Juneau...
SgtDog0311, your place looks mighty fine to me! I really like the logs and the design looks very livable. I see you did all the right things with the roof protecting the ends of the logs from rain. Really like the upstairs deck too, something I have planned for my place. Seems we have been doing it similar, piece at a time when we can get there, not exactly instant gratification, but when it is done, it will be very satisfying knowing we did it ourselves, and no mortgage! Thanks for sharing your getaway!

As often as my name gets dragged into various discussions, I guess I've gotten a little paranoid.Originally Posted by jpickar

As long as you still have 10 fingers (or at least as many as you started with!) you are doing well... I have inhaled more exhaust fumes as well as sawdust than I care to think about just with my chainsaw alone.. :POriginally Posted by papajohn

Thanks for the compliment Eaglesnest. I love to share pictures and you know how that is. When you are proud of something or just pleased with it you like to put it out there. I probably know more than one person who grimaces inside when I go for my iPhone. I think everyone here does the same for guns they've cared for and for the experience they share with reloading and shooting. Cool gig we got here.
Papajohn, Keep those fingers back. If you are doing any wordworking at all you are creating something that's cool... and all yours.
And btw Eaglesnest, I know what you mean by fumes... I just finished the log stairs off the deck this last trip and just that little bit about did me in. My Husqvarna is from 1983 so might be worse or better than the new ones. Just don't know but I couldn't take much worse. You be careful.

Well just got back to Haines on the morning ferry after being gone a month. The channel was flat calm and was kicking myself for not running my boat up. Oh well had to get the car back up after taking it to the shop.
Haven't got a whole lot planned for work on the place, going to try to get some plugs wired up so I can get rid of these dang extension cords running everywhere! Last trip up I finally trenched the main feeder into the house and mounted the panel in its permanent location. After this trip things are going to slow down here I think as my wife has to go have a hip operation later this fall..![]()
So I was really looking forward to loading up some 45-70 rounds here in the eve and I brought everything I could think of and after weighing the first charge of 5744 I found something I forgot to bring... powder funnel!![]()
. Well anyway I think there is a place in town that maybe sells some reloading gear so will see if they have one tomorrow.. always something! Anyway I still have 40 rounds for the guide gun loaded and 100+ for the 45 Colts.. This hard working son of a gun is going to take some time off and head to the range tomorrow!!

No funnel? I'd have grabbed a sheet of paper and a piece of tape and made one. When I want to load ammo I'll stop at nothing!
Looking forward to the next batch of photos this fall. Tell your honey we'll be pulling for her speedy recovery. My Mom (who is 85) had a hip replacement on June 20th and she's already good as new. She's a force of nature.........finished her physical therapy ahead of schedule!![]()
