Took The AR-15 For a Spin Yesterday

Mounted a little Mueller Red Dot scope on it and finally got out to the range yesterday. I shot only 40 rounds of the Wolf 55g that came with the rifle. The first group was like 14" @100 yd and I am then thinking can I sell this +#*>#^ thing now that I have fired it?

Anyway, as I adjusted the Red Dot and fired more rounds the groups began to shrink. Finally down to the last 5 rounds I shot them into a 2" group into the center of the target at 100 yd. Not only was I amazed that the groups shrank so fast, I was also amazed I could see well enough to shoot with the 3MOA dot into 2".

I guess this one will be a keeper so I sure hope those Lee dies show up soon.

They are a real hoot to shoot, eh? Would recommend a .22 conversion kit for it ... not as accurate but allows one to practice with it cheaply.

Now you need to put some REAL optics on it, load some REAL ammo, and let it show you what it can REALLY do!

    Dave, was the Wolf steel-cased?

Re: Took The AR-15 For a Spin Yesterday

There are 2 sharply divided groups on the steel-cased ammo... Group A says you shouldn't put steel cases ammo in your nice new chamber, even though it's covered in laquer. The early steel-cased ammo, the laquer would melt in a hot chamber and cause feeding issues or gum the bolt up; the newer ammo is supposed to not do that. And there is the basic issue of steel on steel in the chamber (as opposed to brass on steel.) Group 2 says "so what, shoot it."

I have never shot steel-case ammo in my AR, but I have shot it in my M1a. I had 3 failure to feeds (from the magazine, the rounds were stuck to each other and the bolt could not strip the next round off the top and the accuracy was nothing to write home about. This specific brand also shot a 1' flame up out of my compensator (I have a Socom16) that was... um, interesting to say the least. I was shooting indoors so it was like shooting with a strobe light flashing in your face every shot.

I don't shoot steel ammo any longer simply based on the poor performance (and the fireball!) even though it is usually cheaper than brass-cased ammo. I also like brass ammo so I can reuse the brass!

I'm not suggesting anything either way, but just so you will know...

I've never shot a single round of steel-cased ammo in ANY of my guns, and hopefully never will, I think it's a patently bad idea, particularly if your bore and chamber are un-chromed, like mine are. Besides, Shel is big on recycling.........that means re-using the brass until it splits.

Re: Took The AR-15 For a Spin Yesterday

I have shot some wolf ammo, just to see how it worked. I was havoing massive jamming problems with my AR at the time, so I was basically trying anything.
It worked as well, or rather, the same as anything else I fired thru my Colt.

Re: Took The AR-15 For a Spin Yesterday

My friend fired some laquer coated wolf through his AR, gummed up the chamber and it took a few days and a lot of gun oil to get the bolt to extract the round stuck in the chamber.

I don't think shooting steel cased ammo is bad, as I shoot a lot of surplus ammunition through my mosins which is all steel cased copper washed, but through a 1000 dollar AR? No way jose!
