Any Tips on Black Powder Loads?

I would like to try dabbling with black powder loads in my 30-30. All I have ever done is smokeless powder so any help and pet recipes would be appreciated.

One big one. If you don't fill the case with powder, use a filler. Very ugly results from light powder loads in a case.

    pacosteve,

Would you be using real black powder or one of the substitutes (Pyrodex, 777, etc.) Cast or jacketed bullets?

Use real black powder and fill the case with a spacer on top. You have to play with compression to build an accurate load. Have fun with it..

My best .30-30 b.p. loads use hard cast bullets with b.p. lube, no spacer/filler and .100" of compression.

I'm not sure which way is the best, real BP or Pyrodex. A couple of shooters at the club us the real stuff and they say they compress about 1/8 inch. where do you go to get material about loading and shooting BP? I will use the same cast bullet I am using right now which is made out of Linotype with a gas check.

    Real stuff vs smokeless.

Black powder is filthy, and corrosive. Gets into parts you cannot imagine including the bolt and magazine.

Smokeless powders, if you want a billow of smoke from your 30-30 try filling the case with something like H870 it will shoot at BP velocities make plenty of smoke because it all will not burn, in the bbl. The finer slow burning ball powders will fill the case and you can compress it to make a quite a bit of smoke without the drawbacks of BP.

Up to you to try if you like. There is one other way that involves a top cap of 10gns of BP over the smokeless for the white smoke effect but not the dirt. I dont recommend duplex loads.

Better all around to switch to 777 through expierience I do not like what any of the BP or substitutes do to my cases, and the cleanup there is not worth the glory.

    pacosteve,
Your bullet alloy is aok since you are using a g.c.bullet. Now for the proper lube...

Real b.p. - you will need to remove the smokeless lube from your bullets and replace it with b.p. lube.....SPG or Lyman b.p. Gold, etc. They will help keep the b.p. fouling soft for continuead accurate shooting whereas smokeless lubes won't.

Substitute b.p. - smokeless lube works aok

    Here are some b.p. sites:

Re: Any Tips on Black Powder Loads?

What Swany said is true, but the .30-30 case seals the chamber well and no .b.p. fouling will get into the action. That has been my experience. After shooting with b.p. or one of the substitutes I clean my cases with a 50/50 White Vinegar / water solution. I immerse them in the solution and when the cleaning action stops (less than a minute) I remove the cases and rinse the cases, inside and out with warm water, then lay them on a towel to dry.

    Have fun!
