My load for my Guide Gun is 46gr of H322, Starline Brass and CCI 200 Primers. That leaves the barrel at 1810fps. I've tried up to 47gr but the velocity wasn't enough to justify the pain.

@ButterNutZ, Deciding when the load is fully developed (for me anyway) would depend on getting the best ES and SD numbers I felt could be achieved, and the accuracy being up to a good level. Hitting a 12" bull at 300 yards consistently is beyond a good many (even majority?) of shooters. I'm not there yet with any of my loads for any of my calibers. I have lots of room for improvement, and that's what makes it fun!![]()

Well it was worth a try, maybe I need to be happy with what I got and quit trying to fix what aint broken. Johny I just checked my notes and I lied about my velocities. The average was 1850fps, ES of 13.59fps and SD 5.56fps for five shot group. I feel that those numbers are as good as it's going to get, heck even benchrest crowd would be proud. The H4198 is awesome powder with my bullet/case/primer/rifle combination. If I do my part this load will hold 2moa at 100 yards and like I said before, rifle will make 12inch steel plate ring at 300 yards if the monkey behind the trigger does it's job.

ButterNutz, what's your load again? (bullet, primer, powder, case), if you're using the BTB 420's, then I may have to try it out. H322 is a powser that likes to work at the top of the pressure envelope. Marshall said that the best 3 loads with this powder would be 47, 50, and 53 grains, and that the loads in between those numbers wouldn't be all that good. Looking back, when I tested the second batch of BVAC ammo that they sent me, I got numbers similar to what you're talking about.
By the by, shoot a PM over to Doc Holliday whenever you need some more of that BTB design, I just got a batch from him and they're perfect. All bullets within .2 gr of each other and super clean casting. Best looking cast bullet I've seen....and costs less too!![]()

I might give H322 a go again when it's time to restock my powder. I cast my own and use RCBS45-405 mold, gas checked and lubed, bullets come out right at .438gr. I seen Doc's bullets and they look great. If I didnt already made my own he would be my go to guy. Great price and outstanding bullets.
P.S. If you wan, I can sand you a hand full of my bullets, next time I make a batch, to see how you like'em. Heck I might get you hooked on casting!
me,
The other day at the rang there was an older gentleman, looked to be in he's 80's. He had a 500NE with him to "plink around". We gots to talking about this and that and he offered me to shoot his rifle. Load was a 570gr cast bullet loaded to 2100fps, man... that's a serious hammer there. It didn't kick as bad as I though it would, but it's definitely a rifle that you dont want to shoot of the bench with out some padding. Any who after shooting that monster 45-70 feels like 308.
I posted these up in another thread, but I think they rate here as well. I loaded the charges posted by some others with with H322, CCI BR2's, WW cases and the excellent 425 PDJ. I started at 50 and went to 53.. While they were all very accurate, 53 grains was about like getting hit by a truck everytime I squeezed the trigger. It was running a hair over 2000FPS. 50 grains ran right around 1800. These are out of my 1895G.
If I was going to use them, the 50 grain load would do ANYTHING I want done. My favorite load is a 405 Cast, with RL7 in Starline cases.. Runs 1700 and is much nicer to shoot and still, not many animals will slow em down.

Scotty - I decided the same thing when I was following Stanton's load info - great loads, but stout. Pulling the trigger on one will get a man's attention.
Love the nice clean holes they punch in paper. Like a great big ol' wadcutter. That's not a bad thing in my book.
