I finally got to use the 1895 on some pigs a few weeks back and I must say I loved the way it handled. I knocked over 16 pigs (no big boars unfortunately) in 2 days with 9 of these falling to the Marlin.
I'm pushing 405gr Woodleighs out at about 1800fps and managed to recover one of them. This one smashed through the thigh of a sow and was recovered just under the skin on the opposite shoulder, causing a heck of a mess along the way. Despite the damage the retained weight was 365gr or 91%.

Love the 45/70!

I hope that those Woodleighs are priced better there than they are here in the states.
Pretty expensive bullet here.
Sure can't argue about the results!

Nice! What load. brass. primer etc.?

gafloss,
Yes that is impressive. And I don't know what your situation is in your country, but if possible, you can use WFN cast bullets for equal results and a big cost savings over time.
Like was said, those are pricey bullets and if you shoot many, you might soon pay for a mold etc.
I would sure like to get a chance at helping to thin out the pig population, but not likely to happen in my area.
Keep em coming!

We generally pay double what you guys pay for any shooting gear. The Woodleighs here are no more expensive than other jacketed bullets. For instance, a pack of 50 300gr Nosler Partitions can cost up $114. The woodleighs cost half this.
If I shot more I would definitely look at casting my own. I've tried some commercial hard-casts which were ok but a little too hard.
This load was Winchester brass, Remington 9 1/2 large rifle primers, 45.5gr ADI AR2207 and of course the 405gr Woodleigh FN SN. This gives me approx 1800 fps and 1.5" 5 shot groups at 100yds.

Very nice!!! Thanks for sharing!
Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?

Makes me wonder what the cost and regulations are for shipping stuff from the US to you folks?
There might be some samples available, but could they even be shipped??
Have no idea.

Well done gafloss, I brought a box of those woodies a while ago and loaded up around 20 or so with 46g 2207. Haven't had a chance to put any down range yet as I still have around 20 of the Rem 405's (45g 2207) which work real good also. Really prefered the woodies as the canelure was in the right spot.
Great job on the pigs, must have been a great couple of days, did you head out west a bit?
Cheers,
Waldo

Wait... I never thought to locate Woodleighs for my .45-70s before.
Those bullets are great.
My favorite .375h&h load is a Woodleigh.... off to send more money toward Woodleigh.

May be good, but in a 45/70 they won't do anything a good cast boolit won't do just as well.
