What is the recommended power of a scope for the 45/70 with a 22 inch bbl?

I recommend a red dot scope like an aimpoint. 1X
How far are you shooting? What kind of group can you shoot with say a 4x scope at 100yds.
I'm a fan of low power scopes on levers- I would say a 1.5-5 or 2x7. I got a leupold 1.5-5 on my guide gun. I almost went with a 1-4. I have a straight 4x on my contender 45-70 w/ 23 barrel and really like it. My 2 cents hope it helps.
I have a 4X Burris on mine and love it. Most folks like the 2-7X's on this forum. You do not need anything more since the 45-70 even loaded hot is only about a max 250 yard hunting arm. With a 1X etc you might need more for the longer shots or to pick through a hole in branches etc. If you have a variable set on 7 and a short quick shot at the biggest buck of your life happens you will wish you had something less powerful dialed up.
All that said a, 7X is really nice for your 100 yard target shooting and your typical hunting situations (and of course your pocket book) should dictate what you buy.
DO by a good name brand and spend what you can, don't skimp on the scope.

1X4 , 1.5X5, and 2X7 all good ideas.... Take your pick and run with it, look through some and see what you like, but buy best quality you can afford... Cant go wrong IMO with Leupold, Nikon, Redfield..... Mount as low as you can to barrel/receiver.....
Good Luck

I use a Bushnell Banner 1.5 X 4.5 on medium height Quad Lock Weaver rings on all my Marlin levers. You can buy better but I'm very happy with mine @ about $85 bucks each.

The best quality you can afford to buy 1.5 X 5 power.
Mounted as close to the bore as possible. Set on 1.5 power it is one of the best "both eyes open" fast on target sighting systems you can put on a riflle. You can train yourself to that technique in as little as a day. It was taught to me about 45 yrs. ago in about an hour. Once you get it, it is very fast.
Set on 5 power, you have all the sight magnification you would normally need for the .45-70 at it's practical range limit

I put an older Bushnell Scopechief 2.75x20mm on my GS, it looks better than the full size 3x9 Leupold I had on there at first. The Command Post feature on the Scopechief really works well.
The 45-70, the only government I trust.
