    Guide Gun Scope

I've been thinking about scoping up my Guide Gun. What scopes have fellow 45-70 owners on here used? Does that take away from the handiness in any way?

I'm running the burris timberline 2-7 x2? Nice small compact and enough relief I can actually mount it on my rail infront of my xs ghost ring I absolutley love it its taken a whole bunch of stomper loads and doesn't miss a beat

GaGuideMan, I'll be watching close here. I could have written the same message as I'm facing the same issue. I'm leaning toward a skinner guide sight or a small scope. My .35Rem has a Leupold 2x7 33mm which is very nice, but I want something simpler, cheaper and quicker than that. Looking forward to read the news here.

I run a Leupold scout scope on the XS lever scout mount with Warne QR rings, unscrew'em real quick and have XS ghost rings ready in a jiffy. I also run a couple 336's and a 444 with standard scope setup's, my prefered scopes are the Leupold 1X4 or 2-7. Also Nikon Pro Staff 2-7 and a Monarch 1.5-4.5.
Too me the 3-9 power variables just throw off balance and Look's, IMHO/YMMV.

Good luck with your scope hunt

What do folks think about a dangerous game type of scope? Something like a 1-4X28. Seems like that would be close to the bore, tough, and handy.

I thought about a more expensive dangerous game scope from leupy but just couldn't pull the trigger on such expensive glass on an less than expensive gun imo

I'm going to be putting on a Leupold FXII Ultralight 2.5x 20mm (wide duplex) in a few weeks on my 1895M .450

Here's a pic I found, not mine. I think this will be perfect for a 100 yard woods rifle here in Wash State. Very light, short, and great eye relief.

You could consider mounting an XS rail on your Guide Gun. Such a rail would give you a lot of flexibility whatever you prefer a forward mounted Scout type scope or a more traditional scope.

My 45-70 is not a Guide Gun but an 1895SBL. I have attached a picture where you can see the scope a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x20mm. The scope has an illuminated MilDot reticle using the Firedot system. The scope comes in a different version called Leupold Hog which has a different reticle. I can recommend these scope as handy and durable.

    Hey GaGuideMan,

Over here (England UK) I use a Leupy with QR mounts right over my XS Ghost Ring and it works just fine buddy! enlarge my photo and you'll see that the Ghost ring sits nicely behind and under the zoom ring and the rear bell of the scope!
