    Re: Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

    I want to add a creedmore type tang sight later, you've got a great pair there. I've wanted a Sharps for longer than I can remember.

    Re: Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

    Nice wood on that rifle Chief! You did good. Check out Buffalo Arms for sights they have some real nice ones and some nice afordable ones too. I went middle of the road as I not into big competition shooting. just hunting and fun range work. Let me know when you shoot it.

    Re: Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

    Tom;
    I have owned the same Pedersoli 1874 sharps as you bought. Those 300 gr. loads you mentioned are safe in that rifle. In fact I have loaded up the Sierra and Rem. 300 gr. HP to a velocity over 2100 FPS with IMR-4198 that was below the 29,000 P.S.I. that Pedersoli rates as max for that rifle. My top accuracy load for the 1874 using Sierra 300 gr. HP was with 41 gr. of IMR-4198 for about 1850 FPS.

    That load printed 3 shots into 1-1/2 inches at 150 yards with the Creedmore sights & bench rested. So do not let anyone tell you that the Pedersoli sharps is not accurate with jacket bullets at the upper velocity range. It also loves cast bullets that are sized 1-2 thousand over bore groove dia.

    When I bought the rifle in 2004, I contacted Mr. Dick Trent who was in charge of the shooting program for Pedersoli. He related that the pressure limit was set at 29,000PSI in order not to void the warranty. He furter stated that rifle was proof tested to just over 35,000 PSI. They even took the pressures up and over 72,000 PSI before they sprung the breechblock .003. He related that Shiloh tested their own sharps to 115,000 before it burst the chamber. The Pedersoli is made from an all "forged" action vs. a cast action for the Shiloh. The Pedersoli also has action walls that are .050 thicker then the shiloh which should make it a stronger action.

    I used my Pedersoli sharps to take three bison all with one shot kills. I used the Hornady 350 gr. RN backed by 52 gr. of Accurate 2015 for a velocity of 1850 FPS. It was rated at 27,000PSI.

    Hodgon and Accurate powders have reloading data web sites that will give you numerous loads for the 45-70 and also list the pressure level for those loads. To keep from voiding the waranty, just keep the pressure under 29,000 PSI. If you use a 405 gr. bullet, you will reach a level of shoulder pain from that curved steel butt plate and your teeth will rattle just before you reach that pressure limit of 29,000 PSI. I speak from experience on that and recoil normally does not bother me as much as it does some other people.
    Have fun shooting.

    Re: Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

    Thanks Bob, great info, I'm thinking maybe keep the Sharps to smokeless powders and shoot my BP stuff in mt Trapdoor.
    Also I'm under the impression that with smokless powder you don't have to fill the case like BP requires.

    I seem to recall a member using 3031 for his 45-70 loads. I checked their website that may be my 1st powder to try.

    Re: Pedersoli 1874 Sharps

    3031 is a good powder for the .45-70. I have used it a lot. Good stuff. Npot too much different than 4198. I use 4198 for the sharps. Reloader 7 is a good .45-70 powder also.

    Cheers.
