    ACCURATE 5744 for loading the 45-70 ((( ??? )))

I load for and shoot several different 45-70`s. However I have always used 35grs of IMR3031 and a 405gr Hard Cast LRNFP bullets. This is my Son and I`s favorite 45-70 load, very accurate and very comfortable to shoot. But I have just been given 5 new 1lb cans of Accurate 5744 powder. I am told that it is a great powder for reduced loads for the 45-70`s, 444`s, and 450 Marlin`s and others. Anybody using this type of powder, and is it a popular choice of powder to use. Is Accurate 5744 and XMP 5744 the same powder. Also is anybody using Varget to load for the 45-70, 450 Marlin or the 444`s. I am 73 years old and am getting more Recoil Sensitive all the time. Thanks in advance.

Ken. I am not a very good shot and am attaching proof! That being said, the big holes are 45-70 cal with 405 gr Oregon Trail over 45 grains Varget. Shot with Uberti HW wirh vernier sights. The little holes are from .357 Henry with semi buckhorn. This is about as good as I can shoot without a scope. Bottom line is Varget worth trying. But if you want reduced recoil you should try some Trail Boss. It is fairly accurate. Can shoot it off your chin and no danger of double charging. Then there is Unique which I am going to load today.

Ken: I can't take the recoil of heavy macho loads either. My go-to load for my 1895CB 45-70 is 13gr of Unique under a 405 gr Oregon Trails Laser Cast bullet, and 12grs. for "plinking". Can shoot 15 to 20 in a row without much shoulder discomfort. But, you asked about Accurate 5744. Have found 24gr Accurate 5744 under the same bullet is pretty mild mannered, but with just OK accuracy. Didn't find it as consistent as the Unique loads, but it did work without the big "kick". Found 26gr. was more accurate, but was uncomfortable on my shoulder. You'll need to experiment here. Good luck with your project.

I bought a couple cans of 5744 a while back. I have used some but not necessarily in reduced loads. I actually use it in my watermelon smashers 2500+ fps ruger #1 loads with 250 gr tsx. thatis impressive round just not for the recoil sensitive folks. When I was using the 5744 in mid range loads I noticed a lot of unburnt powder in the barrel and action. I think if I was to revisit this powder I might try a hotter load or crimp the bullet a bit tighter to try and reduce the unburnt powder.

I use 5744 with the 300gr Oregon trail for a practice round. I do not have the loading in front of me though.
If you use the Lyman's 47th. you will see they show a 5744 load for most calibers they show a lead loading for. I like it and am using XMP 5744 that is supposed to be the same as Accurate 5744 and both are made/sold by Accurate.

24.0gr of 5744 is a very accurate in my rifle with a Remington 405gr JSP. About 1100 fps and Low recoil. Loaded into starline brass with WLR primers.

Great plinking and practice load, but does leave unburned powder in barrel. Sometimes the particles get into the chamber and causes loading the next round difficult. I will not use it for hunting for that reason, but works great for everything else.

I use 30 gr of 5744 with 405 gr cast bullets, which gives me velocities in the low 14's , according to Accurate.
You will have unburnt grains left in the barrel, but they wipe out easily and have no effect on accuracy.
I like 5744 because it's a bulky powder that does a great job of filling the case.
    Very versatile as well.
