HSM Bear Load not cycling unfired rounds

Howdy again,

Has anyone had any issues with HSM 430 gr Bear load not being able to cycle when unfired? I can cycle everything else including the gummies and Garrett. I shot up all the stuff I loaded myself and had to put my press away. I can’t hike the mountains anymore so I bought a side by side. Now I don’t have the room in my garage for my bench.

Still shooting my 1895SBL 1996 Marlinton / Remlin.

Thanks in advance,

I have had no problems cycling the HSM bear loads, 430 gr. No loading problems, no FTF, no FTE. The only time I had an FTE was when I cycled the lever after a shot and the rifle wasn't with HSM loads , the rifle wasn't "level", it was tilted a bit too far to the left so gravity was working against the eject.

Yeah, apparently it was made with some original Marlin and some Remington parts. Lol 2006. Not 1996. Man I'm getting old. I'll take some pics and post for you. Marlin New Haven CT and a Rep barrel stamp. I phoned Grizzly Customs in MT and he confirmed what I discovered on my own. The basic answer he gave was that it was non collectible.

It's not getting extracted. It appears to be to long. If the meplat was smaller the edge of the bullet looks like it would clear. I'll measure the overall length again.

Im glad to know that they're supposed extract without any issues. I will purchase another box give it another try. I'll post the results and take a pic if the problem persists.

Purchased another box with the same results. HSM 45-70 GOV'T + P 400 Grain Speer JFN

Over all Bullet length was 2.544 in. Here are some pics of the problem. The last pic is of the live round stuck in the chamber. The lever is extended all the way however the tip of the bullet wont clear. Thoughts?

Gentleman, I’ve found the problem.

The tip of the ejector was squared off, basically flat on the very end. As you work the action and the bolt moves back, the rim of brass was hitting the tip of the ejector rather than allowing the bullet to move back.

Gentleman, I’ve found a solution.

I removed the ejector and ground down a small portion to smooth it off. The tip of the ejector now has a slight slope which allows the cartridge to move back to the proper position. Basically I was losing the distance of my ejection by the distance from the tip of the ejector to the notch.
I’m ordering a wild west ejector as a replacement, but this one seems to work fine now. I'm hopeful this will help anyone else who may have this issue.

What tools did you use to file the extractor? Is there a good brand or kit you recommend?

Well done. Thanks for sharing the solution. I have had a few difficulties with the HSM 430 gr Bear Loads ejecting a spent casing but it was when I was not ejecting with sufficient vigor and/or tipping the rifle to the left as anther poster said. I have found the total length of the Bear Loads is considerably longer than specs in my Speer manual.

Thank you ClyedP

Those HSM Bear loads are no joke. I shot a box from the bench and that's the last time I'll do that. As for the OAL I've found them to be longer too.

Exactly. My 73% Meplat caused me to adjust my COAL for reliable extraction of an unfired round. You'll get it.

.73 Wow. I though the .64 Meplat that was was loading was flat. Do you gas check those? Looks like the old flying ashtray rounds. Nice pic. Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on getting it working right. The rifle you have is what I wanted for over 6 years. I settled for a blued version and had to file and stone ALMOST every part. It had 12pound + trigger pull.

Sorry for getting off on my own problems that are mostly fixed now.

Congratulations.

TY much.

I too had a few issues with this build. The trigger on mine was 8.5 pounds bit I was able to work it down to 4 pounds. No slop or creep, I'm happy with the trigger.
