I use th h4198 and my new favorite 5744(claimed to be consistent in diff temperatures)
I load mine light to prevent leading so I keep it under 1200. My aol is 2.522 not sure of which way for the sweet spot but but for now i just want to keep it consistent

Overall length will be determined by the crimp ring, you must crimp if these will be used in a lever gun. RL7 is my go to powder, H4098 works well too. Around here 12-15 grains of unique with a cotton spacer is becoming the load of choice. Sounds crazy but I've seen it be very accurate. Load at your own risk.

Quite right. I have used lots of these B/B 405's in my 1895 CB and they have to be crimped at the very leading edge of the crimp ring or they hang up exciting the mag tube.

Boomer, where about's are you in the wild rose Province? I'm central, east of RD

My Son and I shoot 35 grs of IMR3031 under a 405 gr hardcast LRNFP bullet. 1250 to 1350 fps, I have been told, don`t have a crony. In all of our 45-70`s very comfortable load to shoot in any thing we have. We Hunt, Plink, and Cowboy Shoot with this load. And we have never shot a Pig or a Deer that we did not get full penatration either side to side or end to end with this load. I have quit shooting the shoulder bumpers, I turned 71 this year and just to darn old to shoot them any more, and really never needed to, where we hunt.

40 grains of Varget!!! At 100 yards it has shot groups like this in 5 different 1895's from 18.5" to 26" barrels and on 32" barreled sharps.

30 grains of H4198 shoots just about the same and neither load seems to heat up the barrel very much at all. At 100 yards my Guide Gun put 20 in a row inside of 2" in less than 8 minutes. Just one 2" hole when I was done.

The Trochu Gun Club has been working at getting a Cowboy Levergun Silhouette ( both pistol cal & rifle) program going if your interested in that sort of shooting. There are usually a group from Calgary come out so car pooling is a possibility. If you're interested I will relay the new schedule to you when I get it.

I've used Varget with good results, but that was what I had at the time and it gave me 2" groups at 100 yards so I stuck with it.

+1 on the 12-15gr of Unique load, but I don't use filler. My wife killed her first deer with a Guide Gun, a 400gr commercial bullet and 14gr Unique at about 10 yards several years ago. The moderate Unique loads in the .45-70 are a great load for fun and teaching new shooters.
