I'm stoked! Of course I didn't need it, but I just purchased a beast of a rifle, my first 444. Now I own numerous 336's, 1895's, and a 375, but again, my first 444! Questions.....I'm used to the 100 - XX method of determining the date of manuafacture, but the first two digits on this one are "71?" May I assume a 1971? And I guess a longer and heavier barrel is standard on the Model 444? This thing is easily 95% and looks pretty much new. Y'alls thoughts? Pics this evening! Thank you!

Yep, it's a "71"...bet the barrel length is 22". The barrel isn't any heavier (thicker) than any other 444...that big-ol hole in the end just makes it look bigger!

1971 produced both the 24" and 22" barreled 444's. Great year of production, you have one of the absolute best made 444's going! If you have the high comb buttstock, you are really lucky!
Their are only two kinds of people, those who own a 444 and those who wish they owned one,
and yes folks, denial is bliss!

I don't have another 444 to compare it to, but compared to my 336's it's definitely thicker! It's a monster compared to my 30-30's and 35's! Thanks 1BH!
It is the high-comb buttstock actually......lucky me eh?
If Starbow said you have one of the best 444 Marlins ever made, you can pretty much etch that tidbit of info into stone.
As mentioned earlier...here are some pics of my new toy. The wood on this thing is beautiful!
