Excited for the wolf hunt and what model is this old 444?

Finally the feds have delisted the timberwolf; moose calves will now have a better chance for survivaL. And hopefully, challenges to wolf management by the state will not delay the planned 2012 season, for which my 30-30 will be ready.

My new 1970 444 might be a bit heavy for the gray wolf , and I need some help from you guys ID'ing the model. The rifle has a 22" barrel, not the 24" that the spec materials call out for the 1970 444. It has a Monte-Carlo stock with the anniversary medalion. Was this an original barrel from 1970? I haven't yet fired it, but am looking forward to many good times afield - 2012 will my 1st year hunting with a 444. Many thanks for any info you can share about this 444.

I'll post a pic tomorrow. Stamping just says 444, no "T" or anything like that.

I just traded one a couple of weeks ago that was the 1970 model with the medalion, same thing just 444 stamp except mine had a 24" barrel. From what I was told it was all original both from the guy I bought it from twenty years ago and the guy I sold it to.

Either the barrel was cut down or it was rebarreled at the factory.

Their are only two kinds of people, those who own a 444 and those who wish they owned one,
and yes folks, denial is bliss!

+1 definitely not a factory option at that time. The rest of the description points to an original first model 444 (introduced in 1965), which carried 24" micro-groove barrels. Is the current front site dovetailed or a ramp? Does the barrel have micro-groove rifling?
