Difference between a shotgun scope and a rifle scope

I am curently looking for a new low power compact scope for my 444.

I keep on running across scopes that look good, then it turns out they are for shotguns.

    What is the difference?

    Thanks!!

    Shotgun Scope = Parallax @ 50-75yds
    Rifle Scope = Parallax @ 100yds

I think the parallax influence on sighting is very limited with all scopes with less than 10x power. If you set your scope/eye relief properly and can adjust your cheek weld for a consistent comfortable and proper sighting position, ... parallax, in less that 10x scopes has no influence, in my opinion.

I agree with 94/44. I wouldn't worry about it, as a matter of fact, I prefer the 75 yard parallax on a lever gun.

Re: Difference between a shotgun scope and a rifle scope

Thanks to both of you guys.

One of my thoughts is, I really don't see me taking a shot past 100 yards or so, in real life.

Also, with the calibers we are talking about, how far is the actual range we should be using them at?

A man's gotta know his limitations.

In the 3 shops I was at over the past two days, not once did anyone cut through the crap and just give me straight answers, like you guys have been doing. I really appreciate it.

Re: Difference between a shotgun scope and a rifle scope

All of my lever guns, 30-30, 35 Remington, and 444 are set with a 150 yard zero. With the 444 and 265 gr bullets, this means I'm right at 1.5" high @ 50 yards, 2" high @ 100 yards, 0 @ 150 yards, and 2.2" low at 175 yards, and 5" low at 200 yards. I'm not going to shoot any farther than that, so I basically have a point blank hold out to at least 185 yards.

My 30-30s and 35 Remingtons are set up the same way. I like to do my range work at 50 yards, get the group right at that yardage, then shoot 100 yards, and 150 yards to confirm the zero. We have a 200 yard range, but I never shoot for groups that far away. I might set up a milk jug full of water and see if I can bust it. That confirms I'm good to go.

Thank you. That sounds about what I am looking for in my guns. Pretty much dead to rights at 150 is perfect.

    If I need to shoot past 200, I have a L42A1 that'll do it.
