    Iron Sights

What would you think to be a good distance to sight in with iron sights I'm thinking 25 yard with my 444S this gun i bought used and have no idea of who owned it before me I bought from gun broker. I gave the the bore a good cleaning tore it down any new or used gun that comes into my possession. I know i should probably get better sights like limen or skinner peep sight or maybe even a scope because of my eyesight at my age but i just cant bring myself to using a scope at close distances while hunting because close range shots. Does any one else feel this way about using a scope on close range?

If the eyes are going get all the help you can. You owe it to the game you hunt to maximize your abilities and minimize your weaknesses. I am scoping all my Marlins simply because I don't see as well as I once did. I hate that but getting older is not all wonderful. It does beat the hell out of the alternative.

All my Marlins wear scopes. I do hunt in Kentucky where the woods are pretty thick. I have found 2X to be fine even for short range, My three favorite scopes for such use are 1.5-5X20 Leupold VX-3, 1.75-6X32 VX-3 and Burris 2-7X26 Shortmag. If you do use iron sights, practice at 50 yards, that's very real world.

I too would like to have stuck with iron sights but just can't do it any more. I went with a red dot scope with no power. It lets me shoot with both eyes open and has no eye relief so I can quickly place a shot with out having to find that sweet spot on the stock.

    Re: Iron Sights

All My hunting is close Range with the Occasional 100-150 Shot Possible.

I Purchased a Williams 5D Sight that is for the Marlin 336. It uses the two rear Scope Mounting holes.

Gun Smith Put a Taller Front Sight on the front. its a little too tall. When I get around to it
I am going back so we can Mike that one and get one about .2" Shorter. But I like the size of the
    Large Bead.

25 yrds I can Stack em in touching. 50 yards its about 1.5 to 2inch group.

100 yards goes to 3 to 4 inches. I would like to get a smaller apeature for sighting in.

But I love it you can get on target faster. All that wiggle seems to dissapear.

And No worries about scope eye.

and since it screws into the Back two scope mount holes. I Might see if i could take a steel
Weaver type mount cut Drill and tap two more holes forward of the Factory holes and with Some kind of
Detachable rings mount a 2.5 or 4 power scope with like 4" of eye relife.

1.5 - 4.5 or 2 - 7 power scope. Set on the low power is very quick for close shots.

Hummmmm Never used a Red dot scope.

How much Eye relife do they have?

Basically unlimited. From my picture you can see i have it fairly far forward and it works fine. My eye is a good 6 to 7 inches from the tube.

I use two wide angle scopes; one is a 1.75x5x20 and the other is 2x7x32. Perfect for close shots yet has all the power you need if shooting up to 250yds. IMHO a low power scope allows you to see your target better, especially in low light; than any iron sight setup.
