Finally ordred my new Marlin 444

    Hi Fellas
It's been nearly a year since I decided to get myself a 444,last year I imported over 1800 projectile from the US as well as some 600 Unprimed brass all for the 444, so I was keen on getting one.

Money has been very tight since my Step dad fell ill (helping to pay his bills and taking him back and forwards to hospitals.) So I did what I thought I'd never do and that is see if my local gun dealer would buy a rifle off me, to cut along story short, he did,no money changed hands, I have a brand new 444 Marlin ordered and two packs of ammo that he gave me then and there.

By the way you know how much ammo for the 444 is here in Australia? No? Try $60 per 20, that was $120 for 40 rounds of Remington ammo, highway robbery! The Marlin Rifle costs $1000, Blued version. This will be a reloading proposition me thinks

Need to know a few things,so please bear with me:

What sort of scope would you recommend, brand and magnification or no scope at all?

I like the peep sights, do you think a set of Williams FP Peeps and firesights would suffice? Is there any other brand of peepsights?

I have the Ranchdog mould for the .432-265 RF, it is a goer in my Rossi 44 mag, I hope it will go ok in my Marlin.

Is there any modifications I should make to the rifle before use, like trigger, one piece firing pin, etc?

The gun dealer here in Australia that I'm getting the Marlin from said that the distributor is having a bad luck getting the Marlins that he ordered, like he ordered 15 Marlins and got only 5; reckons that Marlin can't keep up with demand since Winchester are not making levers, so I might have to wait from 6 weeks to 6 months, pita!

Anyone heard anything like that? Sorry for the questions, but I have to ask to know the answers,I think?
    Cheers boys

Finally ordred my new Marlin 444

I am not an expert. Here's what I am doing on my "new" 444.

A limbsaver recoil pad is on order--custom grind to fit version so it looks right on the wood stock. I use these on all my heavy recoiling items.

I am putting the XLR magazine follower in. I bought this direct from Marlin.

A WGRS peep sight is on the receiver. This is a poor man's FP. I have standard, twilight, and ghost ring apertures. I like the look, the light weight, and the classic utility. But, I think I'll have to mount a Nikon scope on her.

I have the Leupold one-piece base and rings, and think these are quite nice. I also have a set of Warne bases and Maxima rings. For a large scope, I think the Leupold would be necessary. For shorter scopes, the closely-spaced receiver-mounted rings may work.

I would be happy to help with your peep sight needs (shipping to AU). Let me know if you'd like to try the WGRS, the apertures, and the red firesight. I can sell it to you for far less than retail.

My stepdad is in Rehab trying to walk again,I went to see him today over 320 ks away(One Way),spent over 4 hours just talking and trying to encourage him that he will be able to come home,he's getting there.
I better like the 444,for I imported over 1800 projectiles for it last year and 500 unprimed brass(That was a wake up call in getting all the right paperwork in order,(Phew!).
    Bottoms up fellas

No mods are needed for the 444, it's fine as is. I have used the williams FP in the past with good results, also Ashlys XO sights are good. My problem with peeps is my older eyes have a hard time with low light/shadows, so now all I use is scopes. Any good scope will work, I like the Leupold rifleman 2X7X33 or the Bushnell 1.5X4.5 Banner (Dusk to Dawn) and I only use Leupold QR rings and bases.

You prices are very high in OZ, I would Handload as well, good luck with the triple 4, and keep us posted............................................ ..Marko
Their are only two kinds of people, those who own a 444 and those who wish they owned one,
and yes folks, denial is bliss!

I have a 444 Outfitter. All I did was slap a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5x5 scope on it, and a sling, and called it good. Oh, yeah...I also feed it Hornady 265 fp's.

On my Guide Gun I just put a set of Ashley Outdoors front and rear sights on it, and quit.

Thanks for that,I like the peep sights might try them see how my eyes hold up and if I can't seem to hit anything then I'll put a scope on it.
