I went to my favorite gunshop to look for some 444 ammo and whatever. He sold me 2 boxes of Remington 240 grain ammo and a set of RCBS dies for $65.00. Guess I'll have to email Midway and tell em to credit my account when my money order gets there. I wanted to see where the irons hit and if the rifle functioned properly. I put the step where it had been riding in the past as someone had lowered it all the way first. I have a 50 yard target set up in my back yard but instead put three cans of coors that had been left in a cooler for about 9 months in front of the target frame. Set em a bit too close together as the first hit knocked over the other two cans. Kinda made it impossible to tell just where on the can the bullet hit as the can shattered as did the other two. It's raining so I quit but at least to fifty yards it is minute of beer can. I mounted the Bushnell Banner 1.5x4.5 on it that had been sent to Bushnell for fixing after it lost zero on my 45-70. Hasn't been on a gun since it came back so I thought the 444 would be a good place for testing. Maybe tommorrow night I'll go to the gun range and empty the rest of my brass so I can get down to some serious reloading. Recoil with the factory ammo seems mild compared to the 45-70 I recently sold. I like the 24 inch barreled 444's balance much better than the 22 inch barreled 45-70 and the slimmer profile is easier on the hand.

I did an absolute cleaning of the bore and found a rather not so smooth barrel and I can see something right at where the dovetail is that holds the magazine to the barrel. Surely this has been covered but can someone walk me through firelapping?

There’re several here who can help you…I’m going to bump the “Firelapping thread” btt and then if you have questions, fire away…![]()

I was wrong about the barrel length, it is 22 inches. It does seem to be better balanced than the 45-70 I had. If it shoots anywhere near as good I'll be real happy with it.
