Since I loaded the avatar form another computer i couldnt send it to mine, I;m writing this to see if my wood finish is right or needs to be darker and less of a shine to it. Could you look at my avatar and tell me what you guys think?

it really depends on the year. Some were oil finished and some were varnished and some had marshield which was a semigloss satin finish.

A 1982 336C would have smooth American Black Walnut stocks with the Marshield finish.

From what I see it looks nice. I agree with others it should look like you want it to look!

Depends on the year made but around mid 1970's Marlin came out with a new finish called MAR-SHIELD. There are many people who do not like this finish and those who do. I think MAR-SHIELD hides some of the natural beauty of the wood but it does provide good protection (MAR) (SHIELD)..
Here is the stock of my 336 Zane Gray .30-30 when I bought it - the top picture is the original MAR-SHIELD finish - this finish is tough but if it is scratched it is not easy to repair the damaged area and blend it into the original finish.

This picture is after I completely stripped off the MAR-SHIELD and applied an old English wood finish that is a wax/shellac suspension and hand rubbed into the wood. This finish brings out the natural beauty of the black walnut and is very easy to clean and maintain.

.
The Mar-Shield finish is super easy to repair when it gets nicks and scratches. It requires little effort to keep it looking new. It's a Polyurethane and very tough but it does hide some of the wood grain. It is a great finish for hard use but does not have the beauty of a safe queen.
