Whats the biggest game animal you have killed with the .30-30 cartridge? I have only shot Whitetail Deer, my biggest was a 225lb buck shot at 30 yards and is the deer in my avatar with the iron sighted Marlin in its antlers doing the job.
Lets hear everyones biggest .30-30 game from Groundhogs to Moose. .DT
Shot my first two deer with a 30-30 but never used one since. Gonna have to remedy that but problem is, I want a 35 first. Maybe someday.
Anyway, my first doe was a little thing and my first buck was also just a small 8 point but if you are interested in performance and/or penetration info, the buck was kinda a cool shot. Jumped him and another buck out of a deadfall at about 20 yards. On about the third bound, I shot when he was about 4 feet off the ground quartering away. Shot hit rear part of the ribcage on his left side and exited in front of the shoulder on his right. It was a little high and took out about 12 to 14 inches of spine so I went through a lot of bone! He folded up like a dove and literally bounced when he hit the ground. Amazingly, didn't ruin much meat either. Over the recent years, I've started to really appreciate medium to big bullets at moderate velocities. They seem to put critters down with authority and don't tear them up in the process like the super whiz-bang calibers do.
Hope this is what you're looking for. This should be an interesting post if you get a bunch of replies.
Thoughts on Remlins: The day I walk into a sporting goods and honestly mistake a Remlin gun for a JM gun, THAT will be the day I think about buying one. Until then, they can keep 'em.
Words to live by: Just because something is primitive, doesn't mean it has to be crude. Just because something is custom, doesn't mean it's quality.
It was a 11 pt when I was much younger and 200 lb deer posed no problem carrying out of the woods.
Beyond that I shot a 9 pt larger bodied buck when I was 10 with a .22 Stevens Whippet single shot.
Largest deer I've ever shot body wise was a doe that I could not get on the roof of my car when I was in my early 20s that was with a .50 cal muzzleloader and a patched round ball with 75 gns of 2f GOEX black powder, when put on a scale the next day it won me a big buck contest for a Model 70 Winchester 30-06, scope, case, mounts, and two boxes of ammo. Never did shoot an animal with it.

120 lb. whitetail doe with the .30-30, not much exciting here.... My bigggest buck was taken with my .50 cal muzzleloader, it was an 8 point whitetail.

Only deer here also but I would have no problem chasing anythig in NA except the big bears with my 336 loaded with either 170gr partitions or the 190gr Buffalo Bore load.
There are some nice animals here:
My hunting partner shot his first "Blue wild beest" with his cousins 30-30 at 220m. He said he will never attempt that shot again but as a youngster one do funny things.
The one he shot was a full grown bull in the 230-240kg range. Used a 150gr SPEER FN

With deer, it was a 220# run down and skinny buck. I also shot a not so skinny 380# or so hog.
My first five elk. Cow at 80 yards. Cow at 30 yards. Calf at 25 yards. Cow at 40 yards. And a bull at 5 yards. In that order. All with a '94.
For the last one, I was stalking a cow when I found myself in the middle of a dining herd. She was out at a 100 yards or more when I heard somebody chewing on my right. It was the bull. Must have been a dozen elk within 20 yards of where I was squatting. The wind was right. They were noisy as they pawed the snow and tore the grass. And I had an either sex tag.
I watched him eat. Could see the individual grass stalks as he ground his feed. Little clouds of breath in the cold air. He never knew what killed him. I smoked some tobacco for him, thanked him. Carried him out and was on my way home before 9am.
Will never forget it. And I loved that '94.
