Shot my first two deer with a 30-30 but never used one since. Gonna have to remedy that but problem is, I want a 35 first. Maybe someday.
Anyway, my first doe was a little thing and my first buck was also just a small 8 point but if you are interested in performance and/or penetration info, the buck was kinda a cool shot. Jumped him and another buck out of a deadfall at about 20 yards. On about the third bound, I shot when he was about 4 feet off the ground quartering away. Shot hit rear part of the ribcage on his left side and exited in front of the shoulder on his right. It was a little high and took out about 12 to 14 inches of spine so I went through a lot of bone! He folded up like a dove and literally bounced when he hit the ground. Amazingly, didn't ruin much meat either. Over the recent years, I've started to really appreciate medium to big bullets at moderate velocities. They seem to put critters down with authority and don't tear them up in the process like the super whiz-bang calibers do.
Hope this is what you're looking for. This should be an interesting post if you get a bunch of replies.
