Just got a new 336 in 30-30. Which ammunition do you recommend for deer/hogs. The Walmart where I got the gun has Winchester and Remington in both 150 and 170 gr loads.
For deer both 150 and 170gr Remington will work just fine.... For hogs I would stay with the 170 Remingtons or look at a custom load from some from one of the custom ammunition manufactures. On deer I would keep my shots to 150-200 yards max. and on the hogs I would not push the factory loads beyond 100 yards.
Any will do.
#1 is Leverevolution if it shoots well in your gun, its a great round.
#3 is Winchester Powermax PHP, it hits the hardest and is the most devistating for the money.
Silvertips if you can afford them would be #2.
Any of the other stuff is six of one, half a dozen of the other.
If I were to shoot hogs I would use 170 fusions from Federal.
If your deer hunting is anything like mine, you don't need ammo, just a good pillow.
Is Powermax PHP the same as PHP Bonded?
I've never shot a pig, or shot at a pig. Killed a bunch of deer, using Federal, Winchester, and Remington 150/170 bullets. I usually use Fed 150s. Any will do. Find what groups best in your rifle, and is on sale
For whitetail use whatever is the most accurate. Buy a box of each and see what groups the best. My 336 likes 170 grain Federal Power Shoks and Winchester Power Points the most. The LE's are great but my gun can't shoot them straight.
For hogs stick with 170's, LE's or a premium bullet. I reload and I've bought a bunch of 170 grain Nosler Partition bullets. I haven't loaded any yet so I don't know what I will get.

i stick with remington 150gr sp core locs I have taken a fair few pigs lately out to 90 yards down to 10 yards. pigs are bad news when wounded. I have seen a quite a few charges while bowhunting and dogging boars, so gave up on bows, dogs, and 22mags... Now its a good stalk and a 30-30 + 150grn core locs = dead pigs and confidence in close quarters.
A good youtube pig attack movie is the [u]Wild Boar Beat Leopard
and also Smashed by Big Boar!
these will give you a chill. One of the farms i hunt in sugar cane paddocks , the distance can be point blank to 10 meters and on the last light of the afternoon it is a dangerous game when you hear a massive boar getting cranky but not able to see him. So dont use bullets you dont trust and make sure they shoot straight and dont jam (some cheap highland ammo jammed my 336 every shot, i will never use it again and same for the new evolution stuff. I found on very close shots they were slow killers and you dont want that happening at 10yards, and a few autopsy showed the jacket and core came apart on big built pigs, but I'm probaby the only one you have heard 'say bad things about evos and my rifle shoots the remingtons better.
just a few things i have come across.
I use LE's only. The 160gn LE does wonders on deer and pigs. Bang flop.
Anything made by or touched by man is bound to foul up sooner or later, more than likely sooner or just out of warranty.
