Western Field 740A - EMN...question

Thanks gents. When I picked up my first 39A three years ago I was struck by (pre-safety) "Marlin-itis"...then I had to have a Mountie...well this one was next.

I knew when my buddy showed me the gun and offered it for sale, I would want to have it...you do not see many clean old rifles like this one...I actually prefer the "less fancy" guns...this one is just plain Jane quality!

That looks great! Like new. Who was the retailer for Western field?

Has Marlin always made some rifles with the forearm cap and some with the barrel band? Or do they come and go with different years?

Thanks everyone. I'm still pinching myself. This gun was made for Montgomery Wards.

Don't know all the differences in the guns made for other retailers.

It spent many bad years tucked away in a corner somewhere. Get that nice rifle out and exercise it. It needs a lot of ammo fed to it to get the cobbwebs out. Someone neglected it a lot. Leaving it at home.

That is one beautiful rifle. I was in awe when that first picture rolled up on the puter. It is plum pretty.

Thanks...it has been "neglected"...but in the best of ways because now I get to take this cool/clean gun to the range and have some serious fun with it...I may just have to take it out next fall and whack a Whitetail with it...to be sure it's properly indoctrinated.
