I've never seen anything like that in the past, but I think Truman is correct................I think they are Proof Marks.

I can tell you those marks were not done at the factory.

Truman & Tom, thank you for the information. I am not sure how they would have gotten there. I purchased it from a gun shop in CT that thought it may be NIB. Thanks!

What Gun Shop?.............Did/can they give you any history on the rifle?

This really interests me now, cuz I've never seen or heard of anything like this before.

It is a very like looking rifle....................

I saw one for the first time several years ago and bought it. Mine does have the front swivel on the barrel band.

A HA!................I think I might have the answer, after reading the post that Salmoneye referenced..............Thank you, Salmoneye!

Back in about 2009, when Remington was cleaning out some rifles in the vault in North Haven.............A number of rifles were sold overseas because the President of Marlin at the time (Mr. Behn) would not allow them to be sold in the USA, cuz they didn't have Cross Bolt Safeties...........

I remember getting "Irritated"and discussing it with him because I wasn't allowed to buy a gun out of the Vault b'cuz it had no safety..............

Does that rifle have a CBS safety?...............I see that it does, but I still think it was sold overseas for some reason, and then got back into CT

I visited with the gun shop owner. The best he could remember an older customer brought in 3 NIB rifles the Marlin LTS, Remington 600 222 and a Winchester 100 in 243. He was going to try and contact him and try and get a story on the Marlin LTS.

Salmoneye, thanks for the info. Yall are a great bunch if you want to know about Marlins!

Marlin+ did the dealer still have the other two rifles to see if they had the same stampings?
