I would like to try some winchester silvertips on deer. do the silvertips have any avange over remington core-lokt's? I reload but winchester does not offer silvertips as a compent so i will have to buy loaded ammo.
If you are refering to vintage ammo, I seriously doubt if the Silvertips offer any real advantage over Remington Coreloks of the same weight; most shooters however, find the vintage Silvertips a bit more sexy (and they are also more costly on the auction sites where most vintage ammo is to be found). Modern vintage Winchester Silvertips in my area are several dollars more per box than any of the Remington, Federal, or Hornady stuff ; and I personally think the Hornady Flex-tip is better than any of the over the counter competition, so I will stay with Hornady. There are however, some very positive posts to this site by some shooters using the newest 150 grain Silvertip Winchester ammo; and your gun could shoot them better than any other factory loading, so the best advice is the try them all and use the brand that your gun handles best (the deer you shoot will not recognize any difference).
I did get lucky and stumbled across a box of the 170's at wally world for 17.00. Seem to shoot pretty good, but havent blasted a critter with them yet.
The world is much better with a pair of calipers.

I killed the Bll Moose in my avatar with silvertip 30-30's. I also put one through a farm buck broadside at 200 yards. In one side and out the other. I'vr gotten superb penetration with them.
...said I didn't have a use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it....
After shooting deer with both cartridges, then opening them up and field dressing, The silver-tip is the most effecient of the 2. I have killed more with Core-Lokts, and they always worked, but much better damage inside from the Winchesters. Have a look at the Hornady LE's, they might be the overall best, from what I hear. I have some in a couple calibers and am looking forward to trying them.
Winny is making the silver tips again.. they are expensive.. I don't really think the deer care .. it's really what you like and your gun shoots the best

I don`t know about the any advantage but they just "look" good.
The best part of the hunt is not the harvest but in the experience.
Do the Power Points have better expansion than the Silver tips?

I really like that leverevolution and have seen no difference in the regular ammunition except for...
Can't say about the Silvertips in the .30-30, but have shot the 180 gr in a .30-06. On game, they will penetrate with generally less expansion than a 180 gr Core-Lokt. They seem to be a tougher bullet. They are probably more bullet than you need for deer, but like someone else said, the deer won't notice, especially if you do your part and put the bullets were they belong.
